More salvaged stuff from this weekend's trash bin diversion. Radio Shack scanner, which (after heavy scrubbing) is working fine. You can never have too many scanners or radios, LOL. This required just peeling out corroded batteries, and thorough scrubbing with window cleaner (years of dust on top and some cigarette smoke. Had to hit it three times with the window cleaner and scrub the outside surfaces with a tooth brush). Attracting dust out here though... #ReduceRepairReuseRecycle #radio

Okay, the problem with being someone who fixes things, is everything is a potential project. Free sewing machine (filthy!). Was going in a trash bin, someone cleaning out their parent's house. All of it going in a trash dumpster tomorrow. I resisted a lot of other stuff, LOL. I suspect this will work fine after cleaning and lubrication. Appears to have been in a garage for 60 years. #ReduceRepairReuseRecycle #Repair #Projects #Sewing

LOL always interesting to see what people are posting on Craigslist. Not driving back that direction anytime soon but these are popular for people with retro campers.

Remove rust, lightly sand if necessary, repaint. Or just replace the drain plug (replacement available from outdoors retailers online/etc.)

(As coolers, they suck, not enough insulation and very thin walls, my parents had this exact model and the time to melt all the ice in there in summer fishing/camping was 12 hours).

Hmm, the guy who I got this free bike project from (maybe that should be "free") purchased 700CC tires to replace the rotten tires on this bike.

But, the bike has 27 inch tires. 😂

I guess he was in a little too deep.

("free" = no cost for the actual bicycle, but the repair parts are what get you... I'm estimating about $100 in parts to get this one running again, which is fine, but it's definitely not "free" to repair these LOL).

Random #clock sustainability question: we churn through a lot of very cheap AA powered wall clocks (which inevitably stop working and cannot be fixed within a year -- cheap plastic).

I have one (Russian) hand crank clock, but are there other wall clock options that don't require constant AA batteries and/or replacement? Opinions/thoughts?

REALLY do not like having disposable clocks.

Thanks...

(Update: duh, forgot I built an old fashioned digit clock from ancient parts some years back and it's sitting in the workshop, going to move that to my office and move the office clock to the kitchen, where el-cheapo Bezos clock died)

I really hate bicycle repair work. My son's bike was broken. One of the pedals had broken of.
And that seems a simple fix. Screw out the remaining axle nub and screw in a replacement.
But it was stuck. I used penetration oil. And heat. Couldn't get it lose.
Oh, well. I have another VanMoof for parts. I'll replace the complete crank and front cog.
Couldn't get it lose. Again. Bought a crank puller. Still no dice.
Fuck it. I have long covid. This is costing me to much energy. I'll take it to a bicycle repair shop.
There is one in walking distance.
They are to busy, please make an appointment on the website.
I can't figure where on the website.
Just write a mail.
No reaction.
I am calling them and when it says press 2 to make an appointment.
I press 2.
The connection gets cut.
Fuck it. I just drill out the axle. It's a pain. But I did it before, well sort of
Two days later I have a hole where the axle used to be. But the aluminium aloy has completely melted into the groove of the crank. No way I am getting that to an usable state.
Fuck it. Admitting defeat I combine the wheels, tires and mudgards with the other frame.
I hate VanMoof.
Know to find someone that can replace those cranks on the frame. So I can have two whole bikes again

Here's what that vest was looking like before repairs. Nearly broke a foot picking it up before when one of the pound weights came flying out!!

The pockets are still fraying, so eventually they will need to be replaced, but I did not want to take it all apart and put it back together tonight. I do know, however, that the Singer 201 can easily sew through this and velcro and straps!!

Tonight's sewing project: fixed my son's fraying weight vest. It's been unraveling, and has been falling apart. Re-sewed the weight pockets, reinforced where the belt attaches to the vest. (Cheaply made vest). Ultimately, probably can sew a complete replacement if needed now. Btw, I much prefer doing this with water in a backpack. You can drink or dump the water at the top of a hill and save your knees, or drop all the weight if you need to. #sewing #ReduceRepairReuseRecycle
