Erik L. Midtsveen 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈<p>Hi again!</p><p>My ThinkPad E14 Gen4 is bidding farewell to QubesOS due to minimum RAM. I've had an enjoyable experience using it over the past few months while my laptop could handle a few VMs, I eventually encountered RAM limitations.</p><p>Currently installing Debian on my laptop's internal ~230GB NVMe drive, replacing QubesOS. The laptop already has a 1TB NVMe drive running ElementaryOS.</p><p><a href="https://social.linux.pizza/tags/Debian" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Debian</span></a> <a href="https://social.linux.pizza/tags/QubesOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>QubesOS</span></a> <a href="https://social.linux.pizza/tags/ElementaryOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ElementaryOS</span></a> <a href="https://social.linux.pizza/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a></p>
Greg Slepak<p><span class="h-card"><a class="u-url mention" href="https://grapheneos.social/@GrapheneOS" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>GrapheneOS</span></a></span> <span class="h-card"><a class="u-url mention" href="https://mostr.pub/users/356875ffd729b06eeb4c1d7a70a1f750045d067774d21c0faffe4af2bf96a2e8" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>356875ffd729b06eeb4c1d7a70a1f750045d067774d21c0faffe4af2bf96a2e8</span></a></span> Fair enough. However, Private Spaces don't really have a separate user environment associated with them, and they represent a slightly different conceptual model.</p><p>What I'm saying is that AOSP could also have decided to not create a thing called "Private Spaces" but instead made a UI for integrating User Profiles into the current profile, that effectively would be the same thing as "Private Spaces" but would also stick to the same conceptual mental model.</p><p>So instead of Private Spaces, there'd be a UI for running apps from a different User Profile in the current one, similar to how <a class="hashtag" href="https://crib.social/tag/qubesos" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#QubesOS</a> works. Qubes actually runs entire different VMs side-by-side, and you can transfer data between them, including clipboard contents.</p><p>So with a single thing called "User Profiles" you'd be able to both "log in to the user profile" and "launch isolated apps from that profile inside of this one". There would be only one thing to manage mentally: the user profiles, instead of User Profiles + Private Spaces.</p>
