Both are free and bloody marvellous. </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Science" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Science</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/QuantaMagazine" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>QuantaMagazine</span></a><br><a href="https://mastodon.social/@ianRobinson/114978356463485340" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">mastodon.social/@ianRobinson/1</span><span class="invisible">14978356463485340</span></a></p>

Divitiacus<p>Quanta Magazine has an excellent series if articles about AI and how it works. Daniel<p>The recent hash table article published in <a href="https://chaos.social/tags/QuantaMagazine" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>QuantaMagazine</span></a> is a reminder of the massive gap between theory and practice</p><p><a href="https://www.quantamagazine.org/undergraduate-upends-a-40-year-old-data-science-conjecture-20250210/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">quantamagazine.org/undergradua</span><span class="invisible">te-upends-a-40-year-old-data-science-conjecture-20250210/</span></a></p><p>The research is about theoretical results: no care for hardware, cache hierarchies, use-cases or workloads, or that you can grow a hash table. The results have zero practical impact.</p><p>On the other hand you have modern hash tables like Swiss Tables and F14 built by engineers at Google and Meta powering massive and global workloads.</p><p>Two separate worlds.</p>
