New twist on #marshmallowtest shows power of a #promise
If #children are paired in a marshmallow test and one promises not to eat their treat, the other is much more likely to also refrain from eating it.
Any parent could tell you that children of this age are really big on the importance of promises, and science largely concurs; a promise has been shown to enhance interdependent cooperation in this age group.
Younger children were slightly more likely to succeed.

Yay, out now: "AI #Narrative Breakdown. A Critical Assessment of #Power and #Promise", doi.org/10.1145/3715275.373208

"This article scrutinizes the pervasive narratives that are shaping the societal engagement with #artificial #intelligence (AI) such as agency & decision-making, autonomy, truthfulness, knowledge processing, prediction, general purpose, neutrality & objectivity, apolitical optimization, sustainability game-changer, democratization, mass unemployment, & the dualistic portrayal of AI as either a harbinger of societal utopia or dystopia. The article introduces the notion of "#Zeitgeist AI" to critique the misleading application of the term "AI" across various societal sectors. Then, by discussing the narratives with nuance, the article contextualises & deconstructs often assumed socio-political implications of AI, uncovering in detail and with examples the inherent political, #power infused & value-laden decisions within all AI applications."

"The Sweetest Taboo" is a song by English band #Sade from their second studio album, #Promise (1985). It was released in October 1985 as the album's lead single. While the song peaked at number 31 on the #UKSinglesChart, it fared considerably better in the United States, where it reached number five on the #Billboard Hot 100 in March 1986, remaining in the top 40 for 13 weeks.

I need to prioritize the rest of my night. Been playing with #endeavouros all day. Wasn't able to get Flameshot working with #Gnome right away. I think I could of tried a few things but I just don't want to start messing with too much I don't understand. So I went back to Gnome Screenshot for now. I'll try ksnip next.

I did #promise myself I'd get my stack of #books off the coffee table and clean up my bookshelf up before bed. Was thinking of sorting books by the order I'd like to read them.

“You can’t be a manager in a decently-sized company to make it easier for your night owl underlings.”

I refuse to accept this.

I don’t know what you deem ‘decently-sized’, but for the last 20-some years (since we adjusted our hiring contracts back in 2005 after I stopped working as an employee and switched to employer full time) we have tried to do just that: make it easier for our team (our people) to work when they perform best and that suits them and their life to the fullest.

But it is not easy. Customers and suppliers just do not (want to) understand. And if the moment you work is spreaded across the clock is combined with different communication styles and registration of what has been done is also hard, the cost of getting things completed is sometimes very high.

In the end working like this costs a lot of effort of everybody and every time the team changes you have to go through a cycle of ‘redefinition’ of what is considered reasonable and what is acceptable.

I guess that is why many people just ‘accept’ what is deemed ‘normal’ and adjust, at the cost of those who can’t. I will never! #promise

Dear folks of #JavaScript #async #programming. This #Promise stuff is still voodoo to me. Any simple solution to set a timeout on this byte-receiving loop? I have to collect data from an USB IN endpoint... and let's assume(!) I don't know when I am done (how much data to receive) so that I always have to cancel the last started `transferIn` (#WebUSB) after a timeout (let's say 500 milliseconds). How would you do it? I've trued hacky Promise/timeout stuff, but don't feel comfortable with it.
