Diagram Monkey
Everything not written down

Science is a process. If we consider it merely for the purposes of momentary illumination as an animal, then it is an animal that blunders around somewhat blindly and clumsily, consuming things and excreting various peculiar artefacts: papers, knowledge, synchrotrons. It does this as long as it is alive and active. The various cells and organs of the beast work together, rarely conscious – and never fully conscious – of the larger organism of which they are a part. Each bit does its job1 and, the whole thing muddles along. Seen up close, it’s a miracle it works at all. Seen from a distance, we can perceive progress (in various directions), sporadic maladies that lead us to worry about its health, but can grasp only a hazy conception of how it all hangs together. About this there are theories, but the theories only serve to change how the whole thing works. One thing is for certain, if it ever stops, it will take a miracle to get it going again.

I think about this from time to time. How long would it take to get the corpse of science up and shambling, if all we had was an archive of every paper and text book ever written2? Are these documents enough? I think perhaps they would be, but it’s easy to underestimate the difficulty of the task. It takes a human being – even one with every earthly advantage – maybe twenty five years to attain the knowledge and skills required to contribute to the community of science through independent research. How long it would take with no one to teach and direct them is another matter altogether.

No researcher is ever really independent. They are always part of a broader community. That community is crucial in the formation of any researcher: teachers, technicians, tutors, lecturers, fellow students, the local barista3, and many others contribute to their education in many ways. A community isn’t something that can be written down. One can write about a community, but once the community is gone, no matter how vividly written the account is, all this evokes in the reader is a kind of nostalgia, a sadness, or perhaps simply mystification4. There is no substitute for community, for being part of a community embedded in a wider intellectual and artistic culture.

In the same way, there’s no way to write down everything that a scientist learns in the process of becoming a scientist. There are things that are written down but never shared with anyone – the failed experiments, the ideas that didn’t pan out, first drafts, notes, fanfic – and things that could be written down in principle but never are – the conversations in the corridor and over coffee, the real reason for the fire in the student office. Besides this, there is much that remains inarticulable or beyond articulation: the relationships between people extending (in some cases) back generations, the practical skills each researcher has, the teams that just work, the invisible web of ideas kept alive in the minds and daily interactions of tens of thousands of people, the zeitgeist5. It may not even be something that the researcher is consciously aware of.

When I read silly quotes about an LLM having PhD-level intelligence, or that access to a chatbot is like having a team of PhD’s in your pocket, I have to wonder exactly what they mean.

On one level, it’s very obvious what they mean: why bother hiring all those expensive humans when we can replace oodles of them without any pesky opinions, salaries, health cover and employment rights – in short: without having to deal with people – all for one low monthly payment.

A chatbot might, with the help of a good set of journal subscriptions, be useful for searching through the literature in a flexible way, or (if you trust it that far) summarising what it finds, answering questions, solving trickier integrals and other maths problems, plus a whole bunch of other tasks (all of which, it needs to be said, currently need to be heavily supervised and double checked), but this is not PhD level intelligence (even if that phrase has any meaning). These are things that a PhD can do (and might be expected to do) with varying degrees of success, but that is not the same thing at all. It might make more sense to speak of PhD level capability, but there the gap between what is being promised and what is actually on offer becomes rather more obvious.

The kind of person who thinks that a chatbot is equivalent to a room full of PhDs needs at least once6 to experience saying something so fundamentally daft to a room full of PhDs. To be shrivelled by the judgement of your peers is character building.

0A0 0l0o0t0 0o0f0 0w0h0a0t0 0m0a0k0e0s0 0a0 0P0h0D0 0a0 0P0h0D0 0i0s0 0i0n0a0c0c0e0s0s0i0b0l0e0 0t0o0 0a2.015555555555555555555555555555555 [proof of cat7]

A lot of what makes a PhD a PhD isn’t or can’t be written down8. You won’t see it in a photograph, or watch it in a video and so it is inaccessible to an LLM or any other system that relies on munging tokens from a corpus. A PhD is also expected to have broad command of a subject and specialist knowledge in one or more fields. They should have a degree of intellectual autonomy that means they can work, synthesise information, make good judgements, exercise their skills and be productively self critical, all in the advancement of the subject. When I say it can’t be written down, I don’t mean the thesis. That can be written down (even if it takes an unfathomably long time to do so). But if you think all the work of a PhD is in the thesis then, I don’t know what to tell you. The thesis is the accepted symbol of the general capacity of a PhD9, but even then – in this limited role – it means as many different things as there are PhDs.

What happens when a PhD gets hold of a chatbot that is equivalent to a roomful of PhDs? There’s an assumption built into this whole “roomful of PhDs” framing which implies that you’d know what to do with that expertise if you found it in your pocket. Part of being a PhD is not just having the knowledge, intelligence and so on, but actually being able to deploy it to a useful10 end. The implicit assumption is that you, the chatbot’s interlocutor, is capable of deploying a battalion of PhDs, but if all you are doing is planning a weekend away, then (a) this strikes me as overkill and (b) have you seen how PhDs spend their weekends?

The same line of thinking (not the weekend thing) bears on reproducibility of research and the “crisis”. Like many things, there’s an assumption that more reproducible is better in an absolute sense. Putting together the existing scientific literature, though, exactly how reproducible would it be? Far from 100% and yet, here we are. How reproducible should it be even? What is the correct amount of reproducibility? If we were to rewind to a particular point in time, would it be the reproducibility, or the irreproducibility that was more important?

Lots of things that are reproducible are not science and lots of things that proved not to be reproducible are. It’s certainly not a criteria of demarcation between scientific and unscientific, and it’s not necessary for good science. All of which is fortunate because to make something perfectly reproducible would require no less than a duplicate universe and is thus impossible within this one. More sensibly, we can write down everything we think is important11, but the counterpoint to this is that in many cases we really don’t know what is on that list. Non reproducibility can be more enlightening than reproducibility. Nothing is ever simple, not even simple things.

Like PhDs.

-fin12–

Even the bits that don’t seem to be doing anything. ↩︎

I’m a sucker for sci fi and fantasy stories in which the characters are confronted with the magnitude of their ignorance, whether that’s by the sorrow of lost knowledge, contact with alien civilizations of extraordinary power, both, the fragility of knowledge, the draining of knowledge from the world, the longing for enlightenment, the long descent into darkness, etc. A variation on this thought experiment is if we were to discover an alien library containing their version of the scientific literature. Exactly how much would it help us and how? There is an interesting question about contingency: if we could replay the history of the world, would we end up with something that looks like modern science? Is the question even meaningful. We can (and often do) think of scientists as discovering something out there that has independent reality and while that might be true, how we talk about it, the examples we use, what we teach and when, how we apply that knowledge, its place in the wider life of culture and civilization, all constitute part of that knowledge and are therefore historically contingent. If we were to roll the dice again, I suspect things would turn out extraordinarily differently. ↩︎

Particularly the local barista ↩︎

Ah… you had to be there. ↩︎

These are the articulable inarticulables, but I suppose we must entertain the possibility that there are inarticulable inarticulables, towards which we can only gesture helplessly, this being a case in point. ↩︎

It is not necessary to repeat the process hundreds of times as I have. Nor is it pleasant. It’s inexplicable is what it is. ↩︎

I preserve this here because a few months ago this same cat was partially paralysed after being hit by a car. Today, for the first time, he jumped unprompted and unaided from the floor onto my desk, with the above results. I’m not crying, etc. ↩︎

If I was writing this for Linkedin I would say, with unjustifiable confidence, 90% of what a PhD learns can’t be written down. Numbers are good. Confidence is good. Except the whole thing is unquantifiable12. ↩︎

Anyone who has gone through a viva (at least the UK version) might be forgiven for wanting to replace that particular experience with a chatbot. ↩︎

YMMV, but you never know what will be useful until it is. For years, I carried round a bag that contained many things, including a toolkit, a selection of dungeons and dragons dice and a variety of coloured pens and pencils (amongst other things). Each of these things has been needful at a peculiar moment and without fail, usually while wielding said item to useful effect, someone has said “why do you carry this around with you?” ↩︎

And then what the reviewers think is important. ↩︎

One thing I learned during my PhD was that many old papers are practically unreadable. It’s not just the words that are different, but the whole framework in which those words are deployed is different. The introduction either takes the problem for granted or else the useful information is buried under a heap of fleetingly monumental concerns that the contemporary reader would have taken for granted. ↩︎

#academia #education #phd #research #writing

Bec
The storm front passing the coast to the north-west is going to mostly miss us, today, which means we've had long patches of welcome sunshine and I was able get out into the garden to lay down some lawn-killing cardboard. Pulled some weeds, said hello to the many bees and ladybirds and inspected the lilly pilly seeds to see if they're sprouting (they are).

I've got two weeks to get through the last of my PhD edits, so instead of being out in the garden as I would like to be, I'm inside writing and revising. But I'm trying to persuade myself that this last push is worth it and once it's finished, the weather will be much more agreeable for gardening and I'll have zero weekend study/work commitments for the rest of the year.
