Dr Micha Campbell<p>Another excellent edition of Quaternary Australasia is out! I always enjoy the post-conference student reports, especially when the students seem to have really gotten into the 'AQUA vibe'! </p><p><a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/AusQuaternary" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AusQuaternary</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/QuaternaryScience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>QuaternaryScience</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/Palaeoclimate" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Palaeoclimate</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/paleoclimate" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>paleoclimate</span></a></p>
Dr Micha Campbell<p>The first paper for our paper club is this recent one from McKay et al., presenting a thorough investigation of the (supposed?) 4.2 ka event. I'd read it when it was published, but just went through again in more detail, and what a good paper. Robust stats (of course, from this group), and they do a really nice job of building the case. I hope the group enjoys it!</p><p><a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/palaeoclimate" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>palaeoclimate</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/paleoclimate" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>paleoclimate</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/Holocene" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Holocene</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/Quaternary" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Quaternary</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-024-50886-w" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">nature.com/articles/s41467-024</span><span class="invisible">-50886-w</span></a></p>
Dr Micha Campbell<p>Nice new paper from Danielle Udy reconstructing the fire weather index for Eastern Australia using the Law Dome ice core. Dr Micha Campbell<p>Box of rocks arrived for me today 😍 we will be taking these beauties to the Aus Synchrotron next month to get an idea if they might be suitable for <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/palaeofire" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>palaeofire</span></a> research. Happily, these were collected by a friend of mine for her PhD, which means a potential collaboration with a friend (yay!), and the reuse of old samples rather than collecting new (double yay!).</p><p><a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/speleothems" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>speleothems</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/palaeoclimate" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>palaeoclimate</span></a></p>
Dr Micha Campbell<p>I've said this a few times now, but, pending disaster, today is my last day of labwork for this postdoc! I've got 4 mm of sample to mill (40 samples!). This speleothem grew during the early Holocene before stopping, and starting again in the 1930s. I'm very excited to see the stable isotope data approaching this hiatus! </p><p>The listening entertainment for the day is the Hobbit, as read by Andy Serkis. Libraries are the best 💚</p><p><a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/laborats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>laborats</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/labwork" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>labwork</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/geochemistry" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>geochemistry</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/speleothem" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>speleothem</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/palaeoclimate" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>palaeoclimate</span></a></p>
Ilja Kocken<p>On January 11th I had my PhD defence on ‘Clumped isotope thermometry in deep time palaeoceanography’ in the senate hall of @UtrechtUniversiteit@mastodon.online!<br>The thesis will be available in half a year <a href="https://doi.org/10.33540/1425" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">doi.org/10.33540/1425</span><span class="invisible"></span></a> so that I can try to wrap up some papers, but if you're interested just send me a PM or email and I'll gladly send it to you! I have a few paper copies of the book available, but I can easily send the PDF!<br><a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/PhD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PhD</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/PhDlife" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PhDlife</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/PhDone" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PhDone</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/clumpedisotopes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>clumpedisotopes</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/palaeoclimate" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>palaeoclimate</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/paleoclimate" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>paleoclimate</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/foraminifera" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>foraminifera</span></a></p>
