"The announcement also raises questions about what this means for #Tumblr’s integration with the #opensocialweb, known as the fediverse. By migrating its infrastructure to #WordPress, it would have become a #federatedapp. #Mullenweg admits that was one of the arguments for making the move, but hints that it’s no longer a priority.
“…in the meantime, I think if there was a big push to implement fediverse, we would just do it on the Tumblr code base,” he said."

Rise and Fall of Grassroots #OpenWeb
To understand where the #Fediverse and the #OpenSocialWeb are heading, and how not to lose our way, we need to reflect on where we’ve come from. The history of grassroots #openweb activism offers both inspiration and hard lessons.Foundations are built by real people, social movements start local, they begin with people on the margins – those directly affected by injustice – taking action with the tools they have. In the late ’90s and early 2000s, tech projects like #Indymedia were the […]

Listen to @davew:
"I want to go much further. I think #WordPress has all that's needed to be the OS of the #opensocialweb. We needed it and it's always been there, and I saw something that I want to show everyone else, that the web can grow from here, we should build on everything that the WordPress community has created. It's a lot stronger foundation that the other candidates for the basic needs of the open social web, imho."

"…the #opensocialweb is not just purely vibes and opinions, it is also shaped by technology and software. Technology sets the boundaries within opinions can be contested. Sometimes, technology comes along that changes what’s possible, and expands the understanding of what the open social web is. #Bounce is a great example, of how a new technology changes and expands the contested boundaries of what the Open Social Web is."

Today I woke up to having reached 600 followers... a very happy day and a massive thank you for being my friends here on the awesome cool Mastodon. Smaller networks, bigger brains, friendlier hearts
@bjoernsta wow #FollowFriday gibt‘s hier auch? Wie schön! Danke fürs Intro! Ich freue mich riesig, hier mehr über das #OpenSocialWeb zu lernen, neue Leute kennenzulernen!
I watch videos like "Introducing the #Fediverse," which is a great piece of propaganda, and think, we need more of this.
But it also highlights a faction in the #OpenSocialWeb revolution. This vid puts #Meta front and center as the entity we're revolting against.
But not everyone agrees.
Some (foolishly) believe Meta is on our side of the line; that they'll willingly hand over the keys so we can have the web we want.
If that's so, who are we revolting against?

#FollowFriday Yesterday I met @mervelous at Hamburgs nextmedia Festival. Her heart beats for media innovation and she spearheads a program SWR Xlab to make the #opensocialweb better. But she struggles a little with finding her bubble on Mastodon, so: Please welcome and follow her, friends!
Boosts welcome.
Agreed.
There's a persistent idea in the decentralized revolution, by people who've never experience this type of harm, that if you don't like fascism, racism, transphobia, etc, you can just block.
This is a techno-libertarian worldview that lacks object permanence. It's like a baby playing peekaboo. Just because my hands are over my face, it doesn't mean that the harm disappears.

"Let me be crystal clear before we begin: I say all of the below with love for #thefediverse.. Deep, stubborn, open-source-loving, billionaire-eschewing love. I want the #OpenSocialWeb to win. But wanting it isn’t enough. If we want this thing to thrive we have to face the #userexperience sins head-on—and maybe even laugh at them a little along the way."
