@gurupanguji<p><strong>Liquid Glass and future hardware</strong></p><blockquote><p>To me, it feels like Liquid Glass is really meant for touch screens and OLED displays, where colors can pop and you can interact with the floating glass with your fingers. It makes less sense on a big-screen TV or an Apple Watch with a tiny display. It also isn’t very impressive on Macs, which of course lack (for now) both touch and OLED. Once Apple makes those Mac hardware upgrades, Liquid Glass will be a lot more fitting.</p><p><a href="https://archive.ph/20250616042917/https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2025-06-15/wwdc-2025-biggest-releases-ipados-26-multitasking-visionos-26-and-new-carplay-mbxm63s2#selection-1911.0-1911.427" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">WWDC 2025 Biggest Releases: iPadOS 26 Multitasking, visionOS 26 and New CarPlay – Bloomberg</a></p></blockquote><p>I really don’t understand <em>how</em> touch and OLED make Liquid Glass better. Nielso<p>So, continuing with <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/USBmidi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>USBmidi</span></a> on <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/OSX" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OSX</span></a> <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/Monterey" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Monterey</span></a>. Now that I have found which of my <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/USB" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>USB</span></a> <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/MIDI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MIDI</span></a> devices works electrically, it turns out <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/Ardour" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Ardour</span></a> can access this interface successfully. </p><p>However, I am having trouble using the MIDI interface with <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/DecentSampler" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DecentSampler</span></a> (standalone) or <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/Carla" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Carla</span></a> (my favorite standalone plugin host on all OSses).</p><p>Both Decent Sampler and Carla don't offer a device selection for MIDI devices.</p><p>So my <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/MacOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MacOS</span></a> problem melts down to a) an electronics problem with cheap MIDI interfaces not being opto-coupled as they should be, even endangering the USB-C ports of the MacBook Pro 2017, and b) Certain pieces of software not having a MIDI settings dialog, or there is some mechanism that I don't know yet.</p><p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.falktx.com/@falktx" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>falktx</span></a></span> – do you perhaps have a quick hint on how to get MIDI input into Carla on OSX?</p>
Nielso<p>So now I tried some different <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/USBmidi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>USBmidi</span></a> device with <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/OSX" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OSX</span></a> <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/Monterey" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Monterey</span></a> and this time I don't have dangerous leaking current.</p><p>(Funnily enough, this one does not work with <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/IOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>IOS</span></a>, while the shitty one does work with IOS bot not <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/MacOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MacOS</span></a>.</p><p>Now I'm back on the software side. The interface does show up as being ready in the “audio midi setup”, but how can I actually use it with <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/Carla" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Carla</span></a> or <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/DecentSampler" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DecentSampler</span></a> now?</p>

It works class compliant out of the box on <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a> / <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/UbuntuStudio" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UbuntuStudio</span></a> 24.04. A tiny LED on the USB plug shows incoming MIDI, which I can also see in <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/GMIDImonitor" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GMIDImonitor</span></a> after routing it in <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/Patchance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Patchance</span></a>. (<a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/Pipewire" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Pipewire</span></a> audio system.)</p><p>On <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/MacOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MacOS</span></a> I am lost. The tiny LED does not light up on incoming MIDI. Apparently this USB device is not even activated by the OS.</p><p>It also cannot by detected in “audio midi setup”.</p><p>I mean, this is OSX, the supposedly easy OS for creative people… what's going on?</p><p>EDIT: It turns out that this might be not an OSX problem. The USB MIDI does not show up as soon as the MIDI is plugged in. I guess this is a leakage current problem which might in the end even destroy USB ports. Power supplies without ground connections are prone to this error (those by Apple, too). A MIDI interface should be opto-coupled, but many actually aren't.</p><p>Continued in 🧵</p>
Dr. Brian Callahan<p>I am building gcc-15.1.0 on my iMac G4 (Tiger) machine. It is on stage2, which is a good sign.</p><p>It will include C, C++, Fortran, Modula-2, Objective C, and Objective C++ compilers.</p><p>It will depend on my new PowerPC Mac OS X modernization library, libpcc: <a href="https://github.com/ibara/libppc" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">github.com/ibara/libppc</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p>I'll write a blog post about how to use it once it is all compiled; my goal is to produce a turnkey solution that just works(TM), including assembler, linker, and other utilities, as recent as possible for PowerPC.</p><p>And libppc can be instantly extendable to incorporate more C11 and later features. Hopefully others in the retro Mac community are interested in building that up with me.</p><p>My ultimate goal is to build some flavor of WebKit some day and have a modern web experience (even if slow, and possibly using X11). Nielso<p>People tell me I am stubborn, which is somewhat true. Because I'm not willing to give up on running <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/DecentSampler" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DecentSampler</span></a> on <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/Apple" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Apple</span></a> gear, even though it would be so easy just to use it on <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a>.</p><p>So, <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/OSX" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OSX</span></a> failed me with no <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/MIDI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MIDI</span></a> devices working. My <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/Ipad" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Ipad</span></a> with <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/IOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>IOS</span></a> 15 is too weak. Experience with the VB3m organ tells me that the older iPad with IOS 12 will do better since it has more CPU power left because it's not doing weird graphics BS nobody needs. </p><p>I have to wait, because Apple devices cannot startup if the battery is empty, even when hooked up to the power supply.</p><p>Btw, standard iPad power supplies due to limitations of the old Lightning connector often times cannot feed enough power into the iPad to keep its battery level solid during operation… so even with power plugged in, your music show will fail eventually.</p>
Nielso<p>So, continuing with <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/DecentSampler" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DecentSampler</span></a> on <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/Apple" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Apple</span></a>. Well, the Decent Sampler runs smoothely. But this iPad MIDI thing I don't get to run.</p><p>Another option would be to use my old <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/MacBookPro" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MacBookPro</span></a> 2017 with <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/OSX" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OSX</span></a>. Decent Sampler works out of the box on the old OS X 12.x.</p><p>I plug in my MIDI-USB source, which is a Roland GI20 guitar-to-midi system. OS X ignores it. I plug in some USB-MIDI-5pin adapter. OS X ignores it. I plug in another of these adapters/midi interfaces. Nothing.</p><p>Turns out in the end that the Roland GI20 does not work with Apple products at all. It only works out of the box with <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a>. For all other OSses it needs special drivers.</p><p>Apple offers me an update of IOS 15.something, and with one of the USB-MIDI-interfaces plugged into the oldskool MIDI port of the GI20 I can now finally use DecentSampler on an Apple machine, funnily on IOS 15, which fails with many MIDI applications such as MixingStation + fader controllers.</p><p>However, this iPad is too weak for DecentSampler.</p>

C.<p>This report about <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/Wacom" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Wacom</span></a> graphics tablets is disturbing for a couple of reasons.</p><p>1. They are surveilling users of their <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/tablet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>tablet</span></a> - a human-interface device analogous to a mouse or trackball - recording every application you open, or when you switch between windows of different applications. They are collecting this data via a trip through Google Analytics, aka Spyware Central. There is no possible way to justify collection of this particular data; it is none of their damn business how long you have your drawing program focused before switching to your browser and back again. The author notes their privacy policy really doesn't describe this collection of data correctly, so there really can't be informed consent in the first place.</p><p>2. Why on earth is it possible in <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/Apple" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Apple</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/OSX" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OSX</span></a> / <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/MacOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MacOS</span></a> for a USB human interface device driver to capture this information in the first place? Apple shares a big slice of the blame here - this should just simply not be possible for the driver to collect in the first place.
