@gurupanguji<p><strong>Linux migration stories…</strong></p><blockquote><p>#<br>A pleasant surprise that came from me switching to Linux is inspiring my own father to do the same.</p><p>After telling my parents about my transition to Linux during lunch one day, my father got inspired to switch from Windows and Linux as well. My father is tech-savvy, though he is not familiar with Linux, especially for desktop, so he asked me questions about Linux. Since he uses his computer mainly for browsing the web, I assured him that switching to Linux would not make that much difference for him, especially since there are Linux distros that are aimed at beginners who migrated from Windows or macOS. I told my father that I have virtual private servers that run on Linux too.</p><p>My father also did his own research, and discovered Linux Mint. He was pleased that switching to Linux is not as intimidating as he expected, which is certainly helped by how Linux Mint being designed for Linux beginners who migrated from Windows. After testing Linux Mint on an ancient laptop that my brother used to use, my father installed Linux Mint on his own laptop by replacing Windows.</p><p>In other words, within a week, my family added two new full-time Linux users. It is nice that Linux became another thing my father and I can talk to each other about.</p><p><a href="https://helenchong.dev/blog/posts/2025-06-27-migrate-linux-full-time/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">I am Officially a Full-Time Linux User | Helen Chong, Web Developer</a></p></blockquote><p>Earlier last year, I also tried migrating back to Linux and moved back to a Mac. However, these stories continue to delight the nerd in me. My son for example loves Linux without knowing it’s Linux in the form of ChromeOS. I cannot wait for him to reach a stage where he’s going to convince me to move to Linux one day – or not. @gurupanguji<p><strong>Liquid Glass and future hardware</strong></p><blockquote><p>To me, it feels like Liquid Glass is really meant for touch screens and OLED displays, where colors can pop and you can interact with the floating glass with your fingers. It makes less sense on a big-screen TV or an Apple Watch with a tiny display. It also isn’t very impressive on Macs, which of course lack (for now) both touch and OLED. Once Apple makes those Mac hardware upgrades, Liquid Glass will be a lot more fitting.</p><p><a href="https://archive.ph/20250616042917/https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2025-06-15/wwdc-2025-biggest-releases-ipados-26-multitasking-visionos-26-and-new-carplay-mbxm63s2#selection-1911.0-1911.427" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">WWDC 2025 Biggest Releases: iPadOS 26 Multitasking, visionOS 26 and New CarPlay – Bloomberg</a></p></blockquote><p>I really don’t understand <em>how</em> touch and OLED make Liquid Glass better. Hopefully others in the retro Mac community are interested in building that up with me.</p><p>My ultimate goal is to build some flavor of WebKit some day and have a modern web experience (even if slow, and possibly using X11). C.<p>This report about <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/Wacom" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Wacom</span></a> graphics tablets is disturbing for a couple of reasons.</p><p>1. They are surveilling users of their <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/tablet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>tablet</span></a> - a human-interface device analogous to a mouse or trackball - recording every application you open, or when you switch between windows of different applications. They are collecting this data via a trip through Google Analytics, aka Spyware Central. There is no possible way to justify collection of this particular data; it is none of their damn business how long you have your drawing program focused before switching to your browser and back again. The author notes their privacy policy really doesn't describe this collection of data correctly, so there really can't be informed consent in the first place.</p><p>2. Why on earth is it possible in <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/Apple" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Apple</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/OSX" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OSX</span></a> / <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/MacOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MacOS</span></a> for a USB human interface device driver to capture this information in the first place? Apple shares a big slice of the blame here - this should just simply not be possible for the driver to collect in the first place. Having such a driver allowed to place outgoing HTTP requests is also a big "WTF are they thinking?" moment.</p><p><a href="https://robertheaton.com/2020/02/05/wacom-drawing-tablets-track-name-of-every-application-you-open/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">robertheaton.com/2020/02/05/wa</span><span class="invisible">com-drawing-tablets-track-name-of-every-application-you-open/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mindly.social/tags/google" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>google</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/GoogleAnalytics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GoogleAnalytics</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/spyware" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>spyware</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/surveillance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>surveillance</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/spying" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>spying</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/crapware" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>crapware</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/GraphicsTablet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GraphicsTablet</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/DeviceDriver" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DeviceDriver</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/USB" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>USB</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/HID" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HID</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/HumanInterfaceDevice" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HumanInterfaceDevice</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/driver" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>driver</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/privacy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>privacy</span></a></p>
