#Australia
#NegativeGearing - where rich people buy an investment property using a loan and get a tax break equal to any gap between their loan repayments and the rent they charge for the property.
All while the value of the property increases.

Having renters and taxpayers fund the rich peoples' investment property/ies.

Thank the Liberal National Party and Labor for this corrupt welfare-for-the-rich.

Australia’s housing market has been rigged—a slow-motion wealth transfer that bleeds renters and first-home buyers to line the pockets of investors, landlords, and the politicians who enable them. Decades of twisted tax policy, political cowardice, and media lies turned homes into tax loopholes instead of homes.

The real causes? Negative gearing, capital gains discounts, artificial supply shortages, and land hoarding—and neither major party dares fix them. Why? Because they’re all profiting from it.
This isn’t just a crisis—it’s a scam. And it’s not unaffordable; it’s designed this way.

“two leaders (#LNP / #Liberal / #Coalition / #Labor) drew swift criticism for promising #tax breaks and deposit #guarantees that could fuel #demand for homes without doing enough for #supply, prompting economists to warn of a surge in #HousePrices.”

“A re-elected #Albanese government would allow all Australian first home buyers to purchase with a 5 per cent deposit, avoiding lenders mortgage insurance, in an expansion of an existing scheme.

The government will also commit $10 billion to build 100,000 new #homes exclusively for #FirstHomeBuyers, and will introduce a $1,000 instant #TaxDeduction from 2026-27

Last minute policy. Details? Cant we address the existing problems?

#Coalition Leader #PeterDutton has announced a plan to allow first-time buyers of newly built homes to be able to deduct interest payments on up to $650,000 of their #mortgage from their income taxes.

The #policy would mean a family on average incomes would be around $11,000 a year better off — or $55,000 over five years”

“I want to help #YoungPeople and #FirstHomeBuyers achieve the dream of #HomeOwnership,” — #AnthonyAlbanese said.

#PeterDutton (#LNP / #Liberal) has announced a $10bn tax cut measure, which would give #Australians who earn up to $144,000 relief of up to $1,200 in the upcoming financial year.”

What a load of horse💩. Where is the strategy to industrialise the housing Industry to drive down costs and increase quality? <youtube.com/watchv=36I6jCrWTvQ>

Does #Labor want people to #buy or #rent? Where is this discussion? If not where is the plan to rollback (middle class #welfare) house investment & #NegativeGearing? Where is the talk of #EducationalDebt? Free TAFE for Tradies won’t solve these problems.

Dream on Labor.

I don’t always agree with #GetUp campaigns, but in this instance there is a lot of evidence ( #Murdochmedia ) to support their assertions. In any case, #NegativeGearing and #CapitalGains are two inflationary policies which need to go. My fervent hope is for Labor to be reelected in 2025 to give them the confidence to drop the sheepish attitude and get on with truly progressive policies, include this one.

“As the year comes to a close, let’s not forget how the Murdoch empire is keeping housing unaffordable for everyday people. By protecting corporate greed and blocking bold housing reforms, they’re driving up prices and leaving families behind. But 2025 is our chance to fight back. #HousingJustice #PeopleOverProfit #FairHousingForAll #EndNegativeGearing #StopCorporateGreed

The government is pushing to pass housing supply legislation, but avoiding changes to negative gearing, a tax break for property investors. Critics say it raises housing prices, while Greens-backed analysis shows it will cost $165bn over 10 years. Despite pressure from the Greens, Labor is hesitant to reform it after backlash in 2019.
