Actions for World Refugee Day 2025
More than 65,000 people have died since 1993 trying to flee to Europe to escape poverty, war and persecution. The number of unreported cases is probably three times as high. With the initiative “Beim Namen nennen” (“Call by name”), a Dortmund action alliance, which includes the refugee initiatives in Dortmund and church and civil society groups, institutions and private individuals, is once again drawing attention to the suffering and injustice at Europe's external borders this year. For one week, from June 16 to 20, on the occasion of International Refugee Day, they will send an impressive signal against forgetting this silent drama at the borders and on the seas around Europe.

The "Memorial of human dignity" will be in the pedestrian zone in front of and this time also inside the Reinoldi Church. It consists of many thousands of strips of fabric. Each one commemorates a person who died while fleeing - their name, origin, place and cause of death are written down.
