Phil Haigh<p>Made some important and much belated progress getting my new (replacement) Home Assistant installation up and running this afternoon. </p><p>The Pi 5 with boot from NVMe has been set up for a while. Today I have:</p><p>- Installed Mosquitto on the host. <br>- Configured separate client credentials for Zigbee2MQTT and Home Assistant.<br>- Installed Zigbee2MQTT under Docker and got it talking to Mosquitto. <br>- Installed Home Assistant under Docker and got it talking to Mosquitto. </p><p>Then to verify everything I added four Tradfri Zigbee network routers to the system and they showed up straight away on Home Assistant 😬</p><p>This is the breakthrough I needed to make, to be able to decommission the old service. </p><p><a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/HomeAssistant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HomeAssistant</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/Zigbee" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Zigbee</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/Mosquitto" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Mosquitto</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/Zigbee2MQTT" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Zigbee2MQTT</span></a></p>

The version 5.8.0 </span><a href="https://github.com/emqx/emqx/releases/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><span>release notes</span></a><span> start out awesome, lots of good stuff. And a minor release, so how bad could it be? Unfortunately, if you click 'read more' you will find the "breaking changes" section carefully hidden below the fold. It gets very dark very fast.<br>It turns out this release is mostly about </span><a href="https://github.com/emqx/emqx/pull/13526" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><span>adding paywalls</span></a><span> to a major clustering features, and trashing most of the useful monitoring and ops related dashboard pages. (As a bonus, that PR fixes a private bug in a private Jira.)<br><br>I guess it is time to go back to Mosquitto. It may be a pain to monitor, but I don't have to get legal counsel to read the release notes before upgrading.<br><br></span><a href="https://infosec.town/tags/snarkhome" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#snarkhome</a><span> </span><a href="https://infosec.town/tags/mqtt" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#mqtt</a><span> </span><a href="https://infosec.town/tags/emqx" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#emqx</a><span> </span><a href="https://infosec.town/tags/mosquitto" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#mosquitto</a><span> </span><a href="https://infosec.town/tags/homeautomation" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#homeautomation</a><span> </span><a href="https://infosec.town/tags/paywall" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#paywall</a><span> </span><a href="https://infosec.town/tags/enshittfication" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#enshittfication</a></p>

Ross of Ottawa<p>Yay, found time!</p><p>I've a long list of chores for the weekend, one of which is to rescue a failed <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/raspberryPi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>raspberryPi</span></a> server hosting <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/mosquitto" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>mosquitto</span></a>.</p><p>It's an very old RPi 1B I'd managed to boot from an also-old 2TB NAS hard drive in an ext housing. Most things suggested it wasn't possible w old 1B - but it had been solid for 4 months until Tuesday. Prev it'd last a max of 2months on an SDcard. </p><p>I figured it was a wacky tenuous setup to begin with so failure wasn't a surprise…</p>
Ross of Ottawa<p>Some techy stuff that'll hit all the hashtags…</p><p>As a bit of a <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/homeAssistant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>homeAssistant</span></a> project, I noticed my old <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/RaspberryPi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RaspberryPi</span></a> is quite near my 3D printer (basement) and it just runs a <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Mosquitto" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Mosquitto</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/mqtt" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>mqtt</span></a> server. It has more capacity than that, so I attached an old usb camera, loaded <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/nginx" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nginx</span></a> and wrote some <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Python" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Python</span></a> to take a pic of the printer and stuff it into both a web page and a home assistant dashboard.</p><p>Some innovation though…</p>
Simon Walters<p>Anyone ever tried to rate limit a <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/mosquitto" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>mosquitto</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/MQTT" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MQTT</span></a> broker's subscription? i.e each client is only sent 1 msg/second (but all clients are rate limited separately)</p><p>This is to give a microntroller time to process wildcard subscriptions</p>
