"We often receive reports that don’t violate those rules. It’s simply someone saying they don’t like what another person said. We aren’t argument referees, but people expect us to be. If that argument becomes harassment or discrimination, it’s time for intervention. But even that isn’t always straightforward."

I recognize this.

Hi, friends.

I wrote an article on being a Mastodon moderator. I talk about the process, our mental health, the challenges of mutual aid, and more.

It leaves me a little vulnerable, but I think it’s an important story to tell.

If you like it, boosts are welcomed. If you have questions, feel free to reach out.

Okay, here goes…

Mark W.rites · Being a Mastodon ModeratorPeople ask me what it’s like to be a moderator. Our discussions reveal that a lot of what we do is a mystery. So, I’m gonna lay it out ...

Something to SNS providers and software can learn from the gaming industry is name filters.

Majority, if not all, online #games implement a RegExp-based or manual input name blocklist. In the socmed landscape, software like Mastodon should implement it to prevent any handles **and** display names with "Mastodon" in it.

Instance admins and moderators should be able to add new entries as they see fit. They can choose between RegExp matching or manual input.

It is an effective way to minimize fake accounts pretending to be the platform, instance, service, and/or software. For example, the Mastodon **software** is currently being bombarded by fake accounts about "Mastodon account verification", with "Mastodon" in either their handle or display name, or both.

Other social media software and platforms should implement it as well. Of course, it is not the ultimate solution, but it at least adds another layer to enable admins and moderators to fight against scammers and phishers pretending to be official accounts or channels.

⚠️ ❗ We have a #phishing #scam on #Mastodon. The fake-accounts (often 0 followers/followees) pose in comments as "administrators" or "support teams" of Mastodon asking for account verification. Real admins would never do that!

❗ It's very important that you *report* them! Don't click their link❗

The mods of mastodon-social acted very fast to delete such an account but the scammers seem to try it now on other instances, especially smaller ones.

heads up to everyone that I got malicious mastodon spam posing as an administrator asking for account verification. it was actually caught and deleted before I could even report it!, but they'll probably be trying from other, less actively moderated instances too.

Bonjour,

Loops has a pretty impressive moderation system, allowing admins to enforce fine-grained limits, and users to appeal enforcement actions.

This is just the beginning, we have big plans to make this even more powerful in future releases 😎

Hm, I filed a report against a user on another instance, to the moderation of my instance with cc to the user's instance (no, it wasn't a single user instance).

The profile has now been deleted.

But is there any way to track these things? I don't see anything in my profile or in the UI anywhere, I didn't get an email, any automated replies, notifications, whatever.

How can I see if my report even got through and what's the status?
