Phil Stooke<p>This is a 1993 proposal from French space agency CNES, described by François Costard in 1993. A long range rover would land in Kasei Valles, one of the giant channels on Mars, and drive over 300 km northwards. It would drop off three instrument packages (fixed stations) and investigate several different geological features and rock types. </p><p>We have seen rovers before but tomorrow we will see something brand new.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/maps" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>maps</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/mars" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mars</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/marsrover" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>marsrover</span></a></p>
Phil Stooke<p>The first item in this set of Mars maps was the vast human exploration project of Wernher von Braun. Here is another, from Douglas Nash of JPL in 1989. Nash looked at human exploration of the Moon, Mars, Phobos and asteroids. He assumed Mars would come after new orbiters, sample return and a network mission. 7 sites were identified based on Viking-era images and geology, shown in this map. One of the sites is illustrated here, Chasma Australe on the south polar ice cap.<br><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/maps" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>maps</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/mars" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mars</span></a></p>

Phil Stooke<p>Intermarsnet had many potential sites but only 3 would be used, optimized for seismology. Robert Haberle (NASA Ames) proposed augmenting it with several mini-landers for meteorology, with a much larger latitude range: the Micro-Meteorological Network. The mission could launch in 2003 with up to 16 landers, deployed from the carrier during approach. 8 would be released, entering around the planet's limb to land in a big circle, then 8 more a bit later in a second circle. <br><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/maps" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>maps</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/mars" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mars</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/marsnetwork" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>marsnetwork</span></a></p>

Phil Stooke<p>This map shows some possible Intermarsnet arrays. An array could be deployed from one multiprobe carrier spacecraft or several single probe carriers. Multiprobe arrays (top) include triangles around Tharsis or Elysium with antipodal landers (single points). Single probe arrays had 3 or 4 landers in the same areas. A Phase A study had 3 landers in Gusev crater (Spirit landing site), north Tharsis and near Chryse (Viking 1 area) (shown at bottom).<br><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/maps" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>maps</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/mars" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mars</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/marsnetwork" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>marsnetwork</span></a></p>

Phil Stooke<p>From 1993 to 1995 another network mission was studied in Europe. This was Intermarsnet, a 3-station network for geology, seismology and meteorology. A list of 300 sites was drawn up - but never released (stop doing that!). But 100 of them were listed in a 1996 paper by De Angelis and Chicarro, as shown on this map. A single additional site was mentioned too (101 on this map). From this list, 3-station arrays could be selected. We will see some tomorrow.<br><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/maps" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>maps</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/mars" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mars</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/marsnetwork" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>marsnetwork</span></a></p>

Phil Stooke<p>This is a more complex arrangement of network stations for the MESUR mission, presented at Mars Science Working Group meetings in 1991, 1992 and 1993 (top to bottom). Landers would be deployed over 3 Mars opportunities in about 1999-2003, 4 in the first mission, 4 in the second, 8 in the third. The differences relate to accessibility in given years which vary with the seasons. </p><p>The next mission proposal was completely different from any we have looked at so far...</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/maps" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>maps</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/mars" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mars</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/marsnetwork" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>marsnetwork</span></a></p>
