Hottest day ever lol so just to add to the heat lets build a big indoor hot air balloon for @lpoolmakefest and then spend ages test filling it with a heat gun! While I was away the makerspace had an open day, and they made some posters showing off some of the projects made by members. In the metalwork area, the poster just shows my projects, with the marking gauge, marking knife, and tap follower that I made pictured.

I've been intensely side-eyeing the Creality Falcon A1 laser engraver/cutter, particularly since reading this seemingly very honest review (https://grouchyfarmer.com/2025/06/05/laser-engravers-creality-falcon-a1-review/) that states you should be able to cut medium-heavy plywood (around 5 - 7 mm). Since that would be a major use case for me, anyone around with first-hand experience?

Whoa, this is kinda mind-blowing: all the big sewing pattern companies have a shared owner, and that shared owner just went up for liquidation. I am very curious how this plays out over the next decade or so. There's a ton of vintage patterns out there, but they're a finite resource.

I wouldn't be surprised if there were strong parallels to home machining a few decades ago. It won't go away entirely, but the barrier to entry will become much higher.

Makers of the fediverse. What are the options on the market for a #3DPrinter as a replacement (or complement) to a Bambu P1S? It needs to do multi material support (i.e. like the Bambu AMS), as well as the more advanced filaments like TPU. Quality needs to be as good as a Bambu printer. Bonus if the build plate is big enough for a 300mm x 300mm print.

What printers should we be looking at with these requirements?

I've not had a proper power supply for years. Despite electronics being one of my more significant hobbies. I've always either made do with bodges, or borrowed from friends. I've been meaning to get one for the last few years but could never decide which one was best.

Eventually I decided don't let perfect be the enemy of good. So I built a basic single channel bench power supply that takes a USB-C PD input. And in theory can do 50v @ 5amps. But USB-C PD limits this to 20V @ 5a.

Makers of the fediverse. Is there a European equivalent to "send cut send" ?
