SIB Swiss Bioinformatics<p>Genetics and computational biology also helps us understand our past. The shift to agriculture and a sedentary lifestyle are a major turning point in human history. Yet, how this Neolithic way of life spread has been the subject of intense debate. A Turkish-Swiss team sheds new light in Science by combining archaeology and genetics.</p><p>👉 Read more: <a href="https://www.eurekalert.org/news-releases/1088597" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">eurekalert.org/news-releases/1</span><span class="invisible">088597</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mstdn.science/tags/Genetics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Genetics</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.science/tags/Archaeogenetics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Archaeogenetics</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.science/tags/NeolithicRevolution" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NeolithicRevolution</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.science/tags/HumanHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HumanHistory</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.science/tags/PublishedInScience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PublishedInScience</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.science/tags/InterdisciplinaryResearch" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>InterdisciplinaryResearch</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.science/tags/Innovation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Innovation</span></a></p>
V ¯\_(ツ)_/¯<p>I was halfway through writing an abstract about 'ludic discourse' when I realised I was translating my actual thoughts into <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/gamestudies" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gamestudies</span></a> vocabulary. Ended up at an <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/environmentalhumanities" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>environmentalhumanities</span></a> conference instead, talking about how games make ecological grief playable. Sometimes the best conversations about games happen in rooms that never mention procedural rhetoric—for me at least. SRF IRIS<p>IRIS Insights I Nico Formanek: Are hyperparameters vibes?<br>April 24, 2025, 2:00 p.m. (CEST)<br>Our second IRIS Insights talk will take place with Nico Formanek.<br>🟦 <br>This talk will discuss the role of hyperparameters in optimization methods for model selection (currently often called ML) from a philosophy of science point of view. Special consideration is given to the question of whether there can be principled ways to fix hyperparameters in a maximally agnostic setting.<br>🟦 <br>This is a WebEx talk to which everyone who is interested is cordially invited. It will take place in English. Our IRIS speaker, Jun.-Prof. Dr. Maria Wirzberger, will moderate it. Following Nico Formanek's presentation, there will be an opportunity to ask questions.
