I do not know if I set myself up for failure, or the woman really is not a good thinker.

The message I sent my Instacart shopping before they shopped:

" Hello Jessica, substitutions are more than welcome. We're not a picky bunch (easy to shop for). Rather have something rather than nothing. Your tip is fixed at 10 buck. Thanks for taking our order. "
We sent that message, because we noticed a growing number of shoppers that will simply claim "out of stock" and move on. We wanted to reassure our shopping that we really did want substitutions.

It was a small order. 2 gallons of milk, 1 bag of cookies, 2 sandwich wraps, 1 small plate of Sushi, and lastly 4 extra large cans of Pringles (7.1 oz each).

I suspected the extra large cans would be sold out, since they're on sale for 2.50 each (10 bucks total, 28.4 oz). The normal size Pringles are 5.5 oz. I figured if they were going to make a substitution, they would go with that (5.5 x 4 = 22oz).

Instead, my shopper did something unexpected. Without asking to confirm, they picked 1 single package of those children size Pringles (12 minis) which only offers 8 oz for 8 bucks, and then checked out.

I still gave her the tip, and the 5-star rating, as she apologized. She explained she was a single mom, and assumed the Pringles were for a child's snacks, and not a graduation party. She even offered to pay for a replacement, which I told her was not necessary.

But I cannot help wonder, was this her, or was our enthusiastic message of encouragement our own downfall.

#InstaCart

My #instacart shopper was a regular that we've had before. She's always super friendly and goes above and beyond.
Today was no exception, except the foam bath I bought leaked all over the plastic bag she'd put it in.
Did I give her a low rating?
No.
I kept it at 5 and sent her a polite note as a heads up.
It's a thankless, poor paying, stressful job and if they get below 5, it affects their shopping opportunities.
Mistakes happen. Be kind.

Mother JonesI was an Instacart shopper. I had enough when someone gave me a 1-star review for too-ripe bananas. The work just became an isolated, frustrating ball of stress.

The California Supreme Court's July ruling upholding Prop. 22 effectively ensures gig workers are independent contractors and not employees. That means the state labor commissioner — which has done its best to help keep gig companies accountable over the years — no longer has jurisdiction over individual gig workers' complaints. I examined nearly 200 wage claims gig workers filed with the state since 2020, a fourth of them directly related to Prop. 22. The issues gig workers complain about aren't going away. Now what?
Here’s my story for CalMatters.

CalMatters · California companies wrote their own gig worker law. Now no one is enforcing itProp. 22 promised improved pay and benefits for gig workers from firms like Uber and Instacart. But California isn’t enforcing it.

On Monday, July 15th, I was suspended from Instacart for "consuming without purchase" - shoplifting, as the kids say. I didn't, of course.

But this🧵isn't about proclaiming my innocence. Oh hell no. This is about showing what gig workers go through.

Let's start with email #1, shall we?

According to the email, I have a chance to share my side of the story. Notice how vague everything is. No dates. No store. Just a form letter.

This is on purpose. They want me to lose my mind. To self-incriminate. To give them ANY reason to cut ties.

Instead, I demanded more information.

Continued thread

Before I get too far into a long thread of everything that went wrong, a question for those of you who haven't yet stopped reading out of boredom: are any of the other grocery delivery services that are available in #NewYorkCity #NYC sufficiently better than #Instacart that I might be able to convince my uncle to try one of them, without it costing him a lot more money? Because hoo-boy, after today's experience I really would rather my uncle didn't keep giving Instacart money.

I had a catastrophically bad experience today with #Instacart.
My elderly homebound uncle's computer is broken (actually, fixed but missing in action, look for my thread about Best Buy for THAT story) and Instacart is the only way he can grocery-shop, so I've been placing Instacart orders for him. He doesn't like having to rely on me, so we decided I'd buy him a tablet and set up Instacart on it for him so he could use that until his computer is fixed.
