Les mâles des générations estivales et automnales ont une nuance violette plus ou moins marquée. Le dessus des ailes des femelles est brun avec des lunules oranges marginales qui n'atteignent pas l'apex. Les larves aquatiques sont territoriales et vivent dans la végétation immergée à proximité des rives, là où l'eau est peu profonde. Les mâles de cette espèce ne sont pas territoriaux et les imagos forment des populations denses au bord des étangs. Ils possèdent un pouvoir colonisateur important et apparaissent rapidement sur les pièces d'eau nouvellement créées. L'accouplement dure entre 3 et 8 heures.
