🌏Novel analysis from #MPIM gives reason to believe Earth is more sensitive to #ClimateChange than previous predictions!

🌡️Using observation-based data, our #IMPRS candidate Helene Gloeckner et al. show clear-sky longwave radiative feedback (the change in thermal radiation emitted to space without clouds per change of surface temperature), is lower than most CMIP climate models, & is 10-20% less than widely-accepted theory.

🚴‍♂️🌍 Our #IMPRS-ESM doctoral candidate Rolf Schimmer had an extraordinary journey to the #EGU25: He rode his #bike from his relatives' place in Nuremberg all the way to #Vienna, combining climate-friendly travel with a real sense of adventure!

And because cycling gear is not ideal for a #conference talk, some of his colleagues have kindly brought along his formal attire.

We're looking forward to his talk in session AS1.26 on Wednesday morning.

Happy #EGU everyone!

🚨 📢 #Job alert! 💼
Are you interested in #oceanography with a background in #physics, #mathematics,& data #visualization? 🌊 📊 We're opening a 3-year position for a doctoral #PhD candidate to work on the #ocean component of our #ICON #climate model. You'll be working w/ our "Complex #Modeling & Extreme #Computing" group under supervision of Nils Brüggemann & be a member of our #IMPRS doctoral program. 🎓 Check out the full ad & apply until April 20: jobs.mpimet.mpg.de/jobposting/

⛅ Cloud feedbacks remain the largest contributor of uncertainty to climate sensitivity, &tropical high clouds are most uncertain. Combining cloud-resolving simulations with #ICON & the radiative transfer model ARTS, our #IMPRS candidate Jakob Deutloff developed a conceptual model that links the high-cloud radiative effect to cloud thickness measured by ice water path. It reveals that high clouds are slightly warming the Earth, even more so for increasing amounts of low #clouds.

🔬Our #IMPRS-ESM connects #MPIM with departments across Earth System Sciences & WiSo at #UHH . Yesterday at Schloss Ringberg, our coordinator shared insights from our latest proposal renewal: 60 days, a new team, & a strong vision. The result? A successful program built on 20+ years of experience & excellence. 🗝️ Key lesson? Supporting+empowering young researchers is an investment in the future of science & individuals. 🌍

Full house at the #KlimaCampus Colloquium here in #Hamburg: #IMPRS committee member Moritz Drupp (#UHH) talks about the economics behind #climate policy – first about how a new paper updates our understanding about the costs of climate inaction 💸, and then about how the German #Umweltsteuer (ecotax) helped in reducing emissions of both #CO2 and local air pollutants. 💨
In April, Moritz will take on a new position at ETH Zürich - a warm farewell from Hamburg! 👋

Last week, the doctoral researchers of the International Max Planck Research School for Solar System Science at the University of Göttingen and the TU Braunschweig spent a week near Bischofsheim in the Hohe Rhön to work, study and explore during our annual IMPRS retreat. In this thread, we share a few impressions from the packed and varied program 1/

Last month, our newest #IMPRS #PhD students came together for a weeklong Introduction to Earth system sciences and modelling.

This course takes place every year and marks the start of the #PhD journey here at our institute. It’s a great opportunity to learn the essentials for your future work and to get to know your peers who will join you along the way.

P.S.: You want to be a part of next years #PhD cohort?
Applications are still open until September 15!

A lot of convection in Italy this summer!
#IMPRS PhD students Kenneth Chan and Arim Yoon presented their posters during the 4th Workshop on convective organization and precipitation extremes (WCO4) #conference in July in Trieste, Italy.

A huge thanks to the organisation committee for hosting this successful conference.
The participants had a fruitful week exchanging scientific ideas and networking, as well as enjoying the ☀️ and the 🌊 in Trieste!

You are interested in climate science? 🌍
You want to advance our understanding of processes and dynamics in the Earth system as well as prediction skills?
