Today, Benjamin Netanyahu got approval for his plan to occupy temporarily (so he says) the remaining areas of Gaza still outside of his control. This is despite the fact that the majority of Israeli Jews are currently opposed to this plan. I’m convinced that if the issue were not in the hands of extremists, there would be no war. I continue to hope that Netanyahu's government will be stopped.

But the question is: why do extremists get elected? Why do majorities want to build walls to protect their supposed cultural identity? The problem is that once extremists are in power, even centrists can be forced to move towards the extremes, as Russel Hardin teaches us in “One for all”.

The answer is probably that extremist leaders are masters at distorting reality to attribute all evil to an imaginary enemy. They make wars because wars let them stay in power longer. The human mind prefers a black-and-white view, in which all good is on one side and all evil on the other. Why are the masses so easily manipulated by cruel leaders? When will we clearly distinguish good from evil?
