A visit to a park in Osaka made me dream big for Australia's green spaces
By Virginia Trioli

On a recent trip to Japan I went in search of what had been described to me as a near perfect example of an urban green development in one of the most green-starved cities in the world.

Lest you think #HumanInterest's only problem is that they don't know how to build websites, allow me to point out that they've lost the first deposit my employer sent to them for my account. It simply never showed up in my Human Interest account. This is solidly in "You had one job" territory: if you're a 401k management company and you can't keep track of people's money properly, you should not exist.

In the process of figuring this out I found another bug in the #HumanInterest website related to having multiple employer accounts: it won't let me add a backup email address to my account. When I attempt to do so their API returns this error to the browser: "The primary email address you've entered is registered to another account. Please confirm that you've entered it correctly." Brilliant!

Well, I managed to find half a workaround to the #HumanInterest website 2FA problem myself, no thanks to their support team. I logged in and selected my old employer account rather than my current one, and after doing that I was able to enable 2FA. I now continue to see a banner asking me to enable it when I select my current employer, but at least my account is protected (minimally so: it's SMS 2FA, which sucks but is better than nothing).

Update: as I noted on my blog, the #HumanInterest web site won't let me set up 2-factor authentication. I just heard from their support team that this is because I linked my existing login to my new 401k account (_which their site told me to do_) and their 2FA implementation doesn't know how to deal with that. They gave me a workaround to try, which of course didn't work. I've told them that, and I'm eagerly awaiting the next chapter in the story of their incompetence.

“Human Interest” is terrible

Several years ago I worked for a company which outsourced management of their 401k to Human Interest. It was… not a positive experience. I don't remember all the details—I've worked pretty hard to forget them since they were so unpleasant—but suffice it to say that it was my impression that they weren't terribly good at any aspect of the work they needed to do as a company.
