Stefano Marinelli<p>Ever since I hung the Ruckus on the wall, all peripheral coverage issues disappeared. At that point, I decided to try re-hanging the old MikroTik cAP AC (with the wave2 drivers) in the same spot to compare. <br>All in all, it performs well there too, and all devices remain stably connected, albeit with a lower signal level. I imagine, however, that if there were 40 devices, I'd already see some differences.</p><p>Now I'm curious to test a cAP AX...🤣</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Ruckus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Ruckus</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Mikrotik" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Mikrotik</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Homelab" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Homelab</span></a></p>

Doppel Draconius<p>Finished two of these today.</p><p>This is a Raspberry Pi Zero (green), a small tiny Linux computer running Debian (SSH only, no GUI/monitors). The Pi Zero is wired into a GPS Antenna (pink square) which is in a black weatherproof case and then that case is bolted to the garage's ceiling so it can get GPS Satellite Signals.</p><p>There's two of these devices bolted to the garage ceiling, then it's given an ethernet connection.</p><p>These two nodes get reception from 9-12 GPS Satellites, each satellite has a super-accurate atomic clock inside. So these Pis are getting accurate clocks (down to the nanosecond level, apparently) and that is distributed to my home network's devices and servers.</p><p>Now I can ensure all my stuff (Servers, VMs, devices) gets accurate/synchronized time from two sources I can check and control and not rely on whatever weird source NTP Pool provides.</p><p>Also keeps the clocks synced if the internet goes down for any reason.</p><p><a href="https://dragonchat.org/tags/GPS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GPS</span></a> <a href="https://dragonchat.org/tags/HomeLab" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HomeLab</span></a> <a href="https://dragonchat.org/tags/HomeServer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HomeServer</span></a> <a href="https://dragonchat.org/tags/SelfHosted" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SelfHosted</span></a></p>

Jan Wildeboer 😷:krulorange:<p>My Cute Homelab™️ [1] got a few minor updates over the weekend. All 3 ThinkCentre Tiny PCs are now from the m910 series. Two of them now have 2 network ports each. All have HDMI. And I added a 4 port KVM (Keyboard/Video/Mouse) switch for an even cleaner look and less cable switching. I consider this homelab done from the hardware side. Now the fun begins. With the software. </p><p>[1] <a href="https://jan.wildeboer.net/2025/05/Cute-Homelab/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">jan.wildeboer.net/2025/05/Cute</span><span class="invisible">-Homelab/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://social.wildeboer.net/tags/SelfHost" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SelfHost</span></a> <a href="https://social.wildeboer.net/tags/Homelab" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Homelab</span></a> <a href="https://social.wildeboer.net/tags/SlowHosting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SlowHosting</span></a></p>

They who said firewall rules, NATs and such is fun and games should... be sent to the principals office.</p><p>But... having now spent a significant amount of time configuring I'm starting to get things into a state that I'm happy with. Multi-WLAN, WireGuard based interfaces, selective routing and all those other fun things.</p><p>And I still have absolutely no clue about what reflective NAT is, or whatever all those 513 other settings do... but perhaps it's like DSLR cameras... you mostly use auto and convince yourself that you'll learn that other stuff eventually...</p><p><a href="https://swecyb.com/tags/HomeLab" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HomeLab</span></a> <a href="https://swecyb.com/tags/Networking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Networking</span></a> <a href="https://swecyb.com/tags/Routing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Routing</span></a> <a href="https://swecyb.com/tags/Hard" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Hard</span></a> <a href="https://swecyb.com/tags/Learning" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Learning</span></a></p>
Marcus Adams<p>I think I've pretty well done everything I want to do it, for now at least. Adam - K3CAN<p>I got some feedback about how slow my <a href="https://social.k3can.us/tags/blog" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>blog</span></a> is to load. Jan Wildeboer 😷:krulorange:<p>Addendum 2: Oh, nice! And another advantage of refurbished machines that were used by companies. Ivan Todorov<p>Self-hosting tip from the trenches:</p><p>If you're running multiple services at home (like Matrix, Nextcloud, Home Assistant…), invest early in a reverse proxy with proper domain names + SSL. It makes access simpler, more secure, and lets you scale cleanly later. </p><p>My current combination is Apache + Certbot (Let’s Encrypt), but Nginx seems like a solid choice too!</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/SelfHosting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SelfHosting</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/HomeLab" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HomeLab</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Privacy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Privacy</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Fediverse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Fediverse</span></a></p>
Jan Wildeboer 😷:krulorange:<p>So that's my message to you. Homelabs are fun. They give you a safe place to experiment, learn and become more experienced with Linux, networks and running stuff at a comparably low price. And these cute 10 inch racks make it even more fun! I have documented my setup with a bill of material at <a href="https://jan.wildeboer.net/2025/05/Cute-Homelab/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">jan.wildeboer.net/2025/05/Cute</span><span class="invisible">-Homelab/</span></a> in the hope that more people join the movement :)</p><p>5/5</p><p><a href="https://social.wildeboer.net/tags/SelfHost" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SelfHost</span></a> <a href="https://social.wildeboer.net/tags/Homelab" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Homelab</span></a> <a href="https://social.wildeboer.net/tags/SlowHosting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SlowHosting</span></a></p>
Jan Wildeboer 😷:krulorange:<p>And before you ask, my homelab needs are humble. I don't need or want to go to 10G ethernet. I also don't need petabytes of storage. These little refurbished machines are dirt cheap (around €80-100) and have more than enough oomph for my needs (run containers, build stuff with a forgejo runner, some home automation stuff). I also like that when the sun shines, my solar panel produces enough electricity to run it :)</p><p>4/5</p><p><a href="https://social.wildeboer.net/tags/SelfHost" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SelfHost</span></a> <a href="https://social.wildeboer.net/tags/Homelab" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Homelab</span></a> <a href="https://social.wildeboer.net/tags/SlowHosting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SlowHosting</span></a></p>
Jan Wildeboer 😷:krulorange:<p>It was another one of those experiences. When I searched for support of the RTL8125 on Linux I got a lot of negative results. Mostly by people trying (and failing) to get it running on more obscure Linux distros. But for €20, I was willing to JustTry™. And it works. So. Thank you, fellow colleagues at Red Hat for this :)</p><p>3/5</p><p><a href="https://social.wildeboer.net/tags/SelfHost" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SelfHost</span></a> <a href="https://social.wildeboer.net/tags/Homelab" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Homelab</span></a> <a href="https://social.wildeboer.net/tags/SlowHosting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SlowHosting</span></a></p>
Jan Wildeboer 😷:krulorange:<p>This 3rd server is a bit special, as I added a M2 network card with a 2.5G ethernet port (RTL8125). And as expected, it JustWorks™. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 immediately saw it during install. So now I have at least 1 machine with 2 network ports and can add these M2 thingies to other boxes too. At around €15-€20, it was worth a try and now that it works, I can have even more fun with my setup!</p><p>2/5</p><p><a href="https://social.wildeboer.net/tags/SelfHost" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SelfHost</span></a> <a href="https://social.wildeboer.net/tags/Homelab" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Homelab</span></a> <a href="https://social.wildeboer.net/tags/SlowHosting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SlowHosting</span></a></p>
