Give an example of a project you’ve had to give up on.

Well, that requires some explanation.

Back in the early 1990s, TSR was on a "National Geographic" trip and produced a number of expansions for their #ForgottenRealms setting for #DnD which were basically fantasy counterpart cultures to real world cultures.

#Maztica , based on Mesoamerican cultures, was arguably the worst of these. The initial premise was basically a fantasy replay of Cortez' conquests of the #Aztec Empire, and it went worse from there - the locals basically had little agency of their own, their magic and technology was weaker than that of the "Mighty Whitey" invaders, and so forth.

My concept was to use the massive time skip between the 2E and the 5E version of the Realms to update the setting to a modern, postcolonial area, and give the locals their dignity back and make them the heroes of their own stories, instead of local color for explorers from mainland Faerun.

I did a lot of concept work I am still proud of and wanted to publish something on the Dungeon Master's Guild. But in the end, I wasn't sure that the original settings deserved being redone in that manner - and as a white European, I am probably not the best person to do it.

#ttrpg #Mesoamerica #representation

Jürgen Hubert
After some back and forth, I am pitching four different campaign concepts to my gaming group. The choice of systems I offer is #DnD 5E and #Pathfinder 2E.

Personally, I have a slight preference for Pathfinder - I find it to be more interesting, and am trying to move away from WotC after that OGL fiasco last year.

On the other hand, D&D has "native" support for the proposed settings (#Eberron, #Ptolus, and #ForgottenRealms ), and most of the group is more familiar with that rule system - so I suspect they will pick that.

Then we need to decide whether we will pick the "old" version of the rules, or the new edition that's currently being released. Which means I should look up what the major differences are...

Jürgen Hubert
Okay, I received first player feedback for my #ttrpg campaign pitches. They liked the #Ptolus pitch, but they have been rather oversaturated with #Golarion campaigns. However, they are also interested in campaigns in either #Eberron or the #ForgottenRealms .

To reiterate, this is what I am looking for:

- The campaign should have a fairly strong regional focus - a region which the PCs can explore in depth, make connections with local people and organizations, and visit the same places again and again but under changing circumstances. (One reason is that this allows characters easily leave and join the action if one player is absent. But I have also come to the conclusion that I work best as a GM when I do a lot of worldbuilding for the campaign area in advance, instead of trying to do a "scenery of the week" travel campaign).

- The PCs should have a reason to stick together beyond mere wealth acquisition.

- There should be plenty of room for characters to drive their own plots - individually and collectively - instead of merely reacting to the world around them.

So, any good ideas for regions and campaign frameworks?

#dnd
https://thefolklore.cafe/@juergen_hubert/113335382839115302

The original franchise messed its continuity.

2. _Highlander_ MMO. It should be a sandbox MMO and there should be three modes: unli-life (subscription); limited permadeath (buy-to-play, or a store item); permadeath or 1-life (free-to-play).

a. Unli-life: Players can resurrect again after they were defeated by a Highlander. However, they resurrect as a new character (for obvious reasons). They only carry with them their previous character's assets, fame, and what not.

b. Limited permadeath. After XX resurrections (similar to unli-life), the last chance is permadeath. A player will have to completely restart. OR, if they don't buy a resu store item, they'll have to completely restart.

c. Permadeath. Players always restart fresh after being defeated by another Highlander. They won't inherit anything from their previous character.

3. _Ultima_ TV + Films.

* Ultima 4 should be a TV series. With all the virtues playing an important role (that's the plot anyway).
* Ultima 5 can be a film.
* Ultima 6 a TV series.
* Ultima 7 Part 1 a TV series.
* Ultima 7 Part 2 a TV series.
* Ultima 8 a movie.

4. _DragonLance_ TV + films.

* TV Season 1 a prequel to War of the Lance.
* War of the Lance first movie.
* TV S02, the side-stories during War of the Lance.
