- I am probably not alone in actively hiding posts that include link shortener service links; so you're reducing reach.
- I am probably not alone in actively hiding posts that include link shortener service links; so you're reducing reach.
You probably should not use link shorteners, here's why:
- All links on Mastodon count as 23 characters no matter how long they really are. There is no need to shorten links on Mastodon, it won't save you any space.
- Link shorteners endanger privacy by allowing click tracking, and by hiding what is actually being clicked.
- Shortener providers will shut down, breaking all their links. e.g. Google's shortened links will all show 404 errors from September: https://chaos.social/@root42/114929876895398208
No one owns Mastodon or the wider Fediverse that it is part of.
The Fediverse is thousands of totally independent servers, each with their own owners. Each server only has a fraction of the total network on it. It would be very difficult or impossible for anyone to buy the whole network.
This helps keep the Fediverse safe from corporations and billionaires, because there is no one thing they can buy that would give them control.
More about this:
Do you publish videos on PeerTube? You can optionally give people early/exclusive access to videos by publishing them as "unlisted" or "password protected". You can do this on the video upload screen in the "Privacy" dropdown menu.
You can then share the unlisted link or password with whoever you want to give access to.
This is particularly useful for rewarding patrons with early access, or for asking for feedback before full publication.
Not to beat a dead horse, but Messages from "Mastodon Tech Support" are scams. There is no such thing.
I have banned 5 accounts this morning, operating off the usual suspects. (Not my server)
Moderation > Accounts only manages accounts registered on my instance.
Moderation > Federation only does whole domains.
Moderation > Reports seems to only be about accounts registered on my instance.
?!?!?!
Your posts on Mastodon do not disappear unless you have switched on auto-delete. Mastodon's auto-delete option is switched off by default. It does not do anything unless you switch it on. More info about this at https://fedi.tips/deleting-posts-automatically-in-mastodon-after-a-certain-time-period
If you've noticed posts by other people or bookmarks disappearing, this may be because your server admin's settings are incorrect. You may want to ask your admin about this, there is more info about these admin settings at https://fedi.tips/mastodon-admins-leave-the-content-cache-retention-period-blank
"I'm sick of Web3. I'm sick of corpo shit. And I'm sick of the impression that Web3 Corpo Shit is the only way to be online," @albinanigans writes in a really excellent guide to Mastodon for BIPOC folks, "So Your Black Ass Still Wants to Get on Mastodon":
https://qcb.neocities.org/mastodon
The guide pulls no punches about the Whiteness of Mastodon while arguing that federated social media is indeed the non-corporate alternative.
Many people don't know it yet: You don't need #link shorteners on Mastodon: https://fedi.tips/you-dont-need-link-shorteners-on-mastodon/ And they hide what you are sharing! People can't see what is behind the link. Would they trust you enough and click?
Ah, you do it for tracking?
Well, a lot of people are tired of being tracked.
Lists are a really useful feature on Mastodon, especially if your Home timeline is way too busy for you to keep up with. Lists are also useful for following accounts that may post too often, such as news services or sports results.
Here's a complete guide to Mastodon Lists:
https://fedi.tips/how-to-use-the-lists-feature-on-mastodon
I've updated the guide to take account of Mastodon's new Lists interface, which makes it a bit easier to create and edit Lists.
Hopefully the guide is also a bit clearer.
Those of us with "autodownload pictures" switched off never see what untitled pictures or links are about, and therefore do not interact with those posts

If you see an account that looks interesting, follow it!
Don't worry if it seems inactive or blank, it probably just looks that way because you're the first person to follow it from your server. (More info about why this happens and how to see the actual complete version of a "blank" profile at https://fedi.tips/why-does-someones-account-page-look-completely-blank-is-it-really-blank)
Once you follow an account, its posts will start showing up on your server too. Following accounts is a key part of building connections between servers.
I don't understand why the originating server doesn't report the number of boosts and favorites to my little, tiny server so I can tell what's happening. I usually see about 5-15% of the actual number, but that varies wildly.
It's kinda isolating to be so out of the loop. I'm excited for my server to be able to fetch all of the replies, though.

Tell me again, please, what's the code I need to insert on my own web site to make it cool and green and verified?
Do you post in more than one language?
Mastodon's web interface now automatically detects which language you are posting in and suggests switching to it in the posting language indicator.
For example, if you have your posting language set to English but you start writing in French, the language indicator notices this and starts glowing yellow. Also, French appears at the top of its language list.
