Life beyond Federal civil service for early to mid career?

The job market is saturated with Feds leaving civil service right now and even contractors/consulting companies seem to be taking a wait-and-see approach while this glacial back-and-forth plays out. If you’re lucky enough to have a found a role outside Federal civil service, do you plan to come back given everything that is being done to strip the remaining benefits associated with it as a career? Specifically asking for those earlier in their careers with too far from retirement but significant investment their career with the plan to retire from civil service like people were able to in the past.State and local governments are so reliant on federal funding getting cut across the board and remaining funds are heavily scrutinized before being clawed back. Educational and research institutions are paralyzed in hiring decisions as they also wait-and-see how their funding is affected. So what now? Go get a CDL? Try to become an electrician or plumber? Genuinely curious how people are approaching this when there is theoretically enough time to change career directions?

Finally some good personal news

I took DRP 1.0 out of fear. I was probationary at my MRA with 11 years of service. So not eligible for RIF severance. And at the time that I received my DRP paperwork on Feb. 21st, my agency had already fired 28% of all probationaries. I was not willing to take the risk of either an illegal firing or no severance, so DRP it was. The civilian job market is atrocious. I was having no luck. The most important variable for me was honor - working a job that brings a sense of honor and importance. The 2nd biggest variable was hopefully matching my GS 7 step 10 pay. After months of anguish & depression I finally got some light - just a couple hours ago I received a job offer to work at Children's Hospital. I'll be acting in administrative support of the medical team doing same day surgeries on little kids. It's an honor. And the pay is only slightly less than federal. For everyone out there who has experienced the same turmoil these last few months, keep faith & stay resilient

'They were the doers': Thousands of experts and leaders are fleeing Trump’s government in 'huge loss' for workforce | Washington Post Story

At the National Institutes of Health, six directors — from institutes focused on infectious disease, child health, nursing research and the human genome — are leaving or being forced out.At the Federal Aviation Administration, nearly a dozen top leaders, including the chief air traffic officer, are retiring early. And at the Treasury Department, more than 200 experienced managers and highly skilled technical experts who help run the government’s financial systems chose to accept the Trump administration’s resignation offer earlier this year, according to a staffer and documents obtained by The Washington Post.Across the federal government, a push for early retirement and voluntary separation is fueling a voluntary exodus of experienced, knowledgeable staffers unlike anything in living memory, according to interviews with 18 employees across 10 agencies and records reviewed by The Post. Other leaders with decades of service are being dismissed as the administration eliminates full offices or divisions at a time. The first resignation offer, sent in January, saw 75,000 workers across government agree to quit and keep drawing pay through September, the administration has said. But a second round, rolling out agency by agency through the spring, is seeing a sustained, swelling uptick that will dwarf the first, potentially climbing into the hundreds of thousands, the employees and the records show. The Post could not determine the exact number of second-round resignations, which is tightly held within each agency. But the employees and the records suggest that disproportionately older, more senior and experienced employees are heading for the exit — in part because they fear being fired or having their positions reclassified as political, at-will jobs under a new Trump program, federal workers said in interviews. Others are leaving simply because they are tired of the chaos, mismanagement and poor treatment they say they have faced under the new administration.Jeffrey Grant, a senior official at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, left federal service after 42 years in February because he saw the “writing on the wall,” he said in an interview, as he watched the new administration prepare to fire civil servants. Now, he is noticing many talented colleagues follow in his footsteps, he said, including senior CMS staffers who ran core components of the agency’s strategy and operations. CMS administers more than $1 trillion a year in health insurance, covering over 130 million Americans.“We’re losing some really smart people and really senior people,” Grant said. “Those will be the people that can easily get jobs outside the government … they will disappear, and they may never come back. Maybe they’ll come back under a different administration, but it’s a huge loss for the government.”The scores of departures will have immediate consequences, government employees said, slowing or halting work such as the Food and Drug Administration’s issuance of food safety warnings and the Treasury Department’s disbursement of payments. Other effects will be felt over coming months and years, employees predicted, as agencies lose people representing decades of institutional knowledge — imperiling the quality of work done and services provided.FULL GIFT LINK: wapo.st/43fc1awAre you someone affected by or with knowledge of the Trump administration's overhaul of the federal government? They Installed Absolute Full Agent on EPA devices

So, a few people at the EPA noticed a new system level program running in the background on our laptops. It's called Absolute Full Agent and the company, Absolute, makes products that allow a company or agency to track and monitor their devices, mainly for "security purposes". It operates at the kernel level and runs high level process with no user input or knowledge. They boast about it's tools used when a device is stolen or lost, and basically can do everything to track what a user is doing on the device. Here is a break down of everything it can do via their website: absolute.com/platform/compare-, there has never been an expectation of privacy, but you can't tell me that this tool won't be used to micromanage the crap out of their employees. Also, ofc they are trying to nail anyone using their device outside of their building, which tbh there are so many different ways they can track us that Absolute will probably be used for other purposes...Check your task manager for CTES, that's it. Or in Windows software center, they were just installed this month. They usually tell us when they deploy something like this, but oh well gotta be sneaky I guess.EDIT: Yes, the capability of monitoring basic information has ALWAYS been baked into our devices. Like I said, the expectation of privacy has NEVER been afforded to us. The difference is the SCOPE of what this new software can be utilized for. If you don't understand why excess tracking and transferred screenshots can be used against you even if you are doing your regular work, you should think a little bit more critically about why they installed this if "we've always had this sort of thing".

DOGE Worker basically admits gov works fine lol- “…it’s kind of fine. because the government works.”

futurism.com/doge-operative-su from the article:“Upon arriving at the massive department that currently employs nearly 500,000 people, Lavignia was met not with bored bureaucrats lazily collecting cushy government paychecks, but with mission-driven workers who "love their jobs.""In a sense, that makes the DOGE agenda a little bit more complicated, because if half the government took [the agency's buyout offers], then we wouldn’t have to do much more," the tech founder said. "We’d just basically use software to plug holes. But that’s not what’s happening."Unsurprisingly, Lavignia found that things work a lot differently in the halls of government agencies than they do in Silicon Valley."I would say the culture shock is mostly a lot of meetings, not a lot of decisions," he remarked. "But honestly, it’s kind of fine — because the government works. It’s not as inefficient as I was expecting, to be honest. I was hoping for more easy wins."

Dress Code in Your Fed Office

What is dress code like in your office? My office has a pretty lengthy and vague dress code some folks in office leadership are now using unfairly against a single employee while everyone else violates the same rules regularly. We are all stressed out knowing this employee is being harassed but we can’t figure out how to help her.
