Cue the somewhat surprised locals, who pointed out that their womenfolk - and even men - have been doing it on a yearly basis since before history was invented.

Note also the politician's apology:

"I am truly saddened that the coverage of my journey may have caused concern or upset..."

Well, no: the upset is mainly about the claims you made, not the journey or its coverage.
