So, for my 6th D&D session, I had one player drop out permanently, and recruited another player during my divorce party. So I expected to do a decent amount of prep to make a nice coherent story so that the old player phased out, and the new player joined, right?

Well, then ADHD hit, and I ended up with 4 lines of prep in total. 4 lines and a lot of improvisation, and great chemistry between new and old players made it pretty easy to fill the entire session. I honestly think I like the improv stuff more than the heavily planned stuff.

I just realised that being a DM for a group made up entirely of real life archaeologists means that getting their characters to do dungeon delves in ancient ruined temples is just making them roleplay that they're at work.

May as well just give them quests where they're digging test trenches and tell them they have to report on the cross sections.

Just a reminder, but if you're writing a campaign and worried you have a shitty NPC, consider:

Tom. Fucking. Bombadil, from LOTR.

Tom Bombadil, who showed up, sang a few songs, put on the One Ring, basically said "Huh, that's neat", before giving The Ring back and moving on.

Tom Bombadil, who, later, was briefly considered as ringbearer, before Gandalf essentially said the asshole would take the ring, put it up on his hearth, and *completely forget about it.*

If Tolkein can get away with Bombadil, you can get away with your NPC.

(If you haven't guessed, I really hate Bombadil.)

I'll be posting some of the work I did back on March-April for the students graduating this year, pariticipating in the Supportive Gaming Community at TCU (all the way in Texas!). With this batch, they filled up an entire wall. 45 portraits in 5 years of graduating students. I'm so proud to be a small part of the project!

So, today I bring you Jinx the tiefling and her seagull familiar Yarggh!

Okay DMs:

The game is done, all the prep was worthwhile, your players had fun. Now they've gone home, and all that energy you built up before that has just been spent.

How do you relax? Recuperate?

we want to privately chat with an expert about handling speciesism and racism in TTRPG settings.

we're be happy to pay for this, in particular with a black, queer, and disabled expert, but would also be happy to be sent links to read or books to buy written by someone with experience and perspective that we can't have.

if you're the person for us, reply, mentions, DM, etc are all fine, but you also can email us at tabletopsocial@chaosfae.com

please boost!
