Cologne gets Europe's largest river water heat pump.

Cologne is decarbonising its district heating system. To this end, a heat pump with a capacity of 150 megawatts is being built on the Rhine.

The heat pump will supply Cologne's district heating network and will be the largest river water heat pump in Europe.

**World’s largest CO2-based seawater heat pump goes online**

This heat pump itself, and the system it is part of (e.g. e-boiler) is responsive to the electricity system: on a huge scale what many ‘small’ residential heat pumps can also do: adjust consumption (very quickly for frequency regulation, or longer in time to match renewable electricity generation)

pv magazine InternationalWorld’s largest CO2-based seawater heat pump goes onlineGerman engine manufacturer MAN Energy Solutions’ CO2-based seawater heat pump, located in the Danish port city of Esbjerg, has started operation. The facility, with a total heating capacity of 70 MW, will provide climate-neutral heat to Esbjerg and neighbouring town Varde.

Many cities might even do without #HeatPumps for heating, as #geothermal resources like the #Molassebecken in Southern Germany provide valuable #hydrothermal temperatures above 70°C-100°C at moderate drilling depths.

The city of #Munich already features 6 geothermal plants, feeding #decarbonisedHeat into the 900km #DistrictHeating network.

"World's largest heat pump" is a 🇫🇮 lämpöpumppu (the only Finnish word I know, don't ask)

And in the competition for largest heat pumps, it is a bit like the Olympics: with many subcategories (heat source), there are many winners.

EURACTIV · German company to build world’s largest heat pump in HelsinkiBy Nikolaus J. Kurmayer

Municipalities in #Germany need to compose plans to decarbonise heating, using solutions like #DistrictHeating or ground source heat pumps. A recent study shows that new district heating infrastructure requires 44b€ investment by 2030, or 10b€ more than previously estimated. The industry calls for subsidies of 3,4 b€ per year, but actual support is a fraction of this.

In Finland #bioenergy is used widely for #DistrictHeating. Logging should prioritise supply of more valuable building materials that also constitute long-term carbon storage, and only logging residues burnt (to replace fossil fuels) in heat generation.
New study finds that "While biomass combustion generates direct CO2 emissions, forest fine woody debris will also be decomposed to CO2, but with a half-life of one or two decades in the studied environment"
