IMO very relevant when editing manuscripts. I have the JPEG, but when I need to zoom in really closely into some detail of the handwriting, I always go to the #TIFF.
Luckily, the editions and library infrastructures I am working on/with always offer both. But it may be that they don't offer the same resolution, as you presumed in your question.
