Huge news this morning. The federal government has announced the final phase of the NDP Canada Dental Care Plan, which my NDP colleagues and I fought so hard for. As of May, the plan will cover ALL Canadians who don’t have insurance and whose household income after taxes is less than $90,000.

"National Democratic Party ... did some very good work as [Justin] Trudeau's coalition partner. They made him do a bunch of stuff he wouldn't have done otherwise, like universal dental care ..."

🇺🇸 Dental software company Orthominds exposed publicly over 300 database backups with PII & PHI of over 200,000 patients.

Another issue I dealt with that serves as a reminder to all companies that train their employees to ignore any email that has "scary" links that you might just be setting yourself up for failure doing that.

The bacterial species in subgingival plaque can be grouped into 5 major complexes. The red complex (Porphyromonas gingivalis, Treponema denticola, Tannerella forsythia) is closely tied to periodontal disease severity (pocket depth, bleeding). These findings highlight the role of sequential microbial colonization in shaping pathogenic ecosystems.

Periodontal diseases show a marked increase in prevalence with age, as highlighted by data from Jönköping, Sweden (1983). The progression is irreversible: early diagnosis intervention are essential to protect oral health.

Dark blue: healthy, orange: gingivitis, grey: periodontitis with mean bone loss <1/3 height, yellow: 1/3-2/3, light blue: >2/3.

Periodontal diseases show high global prevalence, affecting ~90% of young adults (35–44yo): half with gingivitis, half with periodontitis, with no regional specificity.

The dentist I’ve seen since childhood is now out of network with my employer-provided dental insurance. That means I’d have to pay at least $120 per visit out of pocket for routine dental care if I wanted to keep seeing the same dentist. I don’t have a choice about my dental insurance, so I guess I have to find a new dentist.

This isn’t news but the way we pay for healthcare in the US is so stupid and I hate it.

The question to evaluate for this week is: Toothpaste or dental tablets.

I never gave this a thought until last month. The theory behind these chewable tablets are good:

- No need to estimate the amount of toothpaste you need. Just take the amount that matched the number of days times the number of times you brush your teeth per day.
- No messy tube to carry along or to discard.
- Chew, brush, spit-out, rinse.

So I am going to evaluate them at home this week to see how well it stacks up against TP.
