#manufacturingConsent

*edited to add: there are often open-source alternatives, many of which need help with everything from translation to documentation to writing code. That is to say, I acknowledge that for many interactions, my posting the hashtag on it's own is reductionist, but perhaps where Manufacturing Consent seems relevant, we can trace our steps back and figure out the point we started consensually engaging with the entity that is or seems to be manufacturing consent.

There's probably a spectrum of degrees of choice represented at those points we started consensually engaging with the other entity, depending on (em)urgency of the customer's need and degree of monopoly supplier holds. Eg.: emergency medical care > insulin pump > railway ticket.

The user has to consent to all of those things, but obviously at one end of the spectrum is "or death", and moving away from that things get more relaxed.

Crikey. Sorry. Don't stand there. I think there's a soapbox on the floor. Dangerous stuff this social media!

Yay! I've finally got around to installing GrapheneOS on my old Pixel 6A. It was really easy and fast. Now I just have to manually install aaaall the apps that normally get copied over with new Android devices. And then test it a bit until I'm comfy, then put in my two SIMs. Meeeeep!!

Voorlopig even Google contacten en kalender maar even verhuisd naar:

Die gratis 8Gb is voor mij meer dan genoeg en is vooral bedoeld voor bestands uitwisseling. De upload via 5G is nou eenmaal niet zo snel. 😇

Today on the degoogling journey: How can I make the best out of a Pixel's camera on #GrapheneOS? 🤔

The default camera app doesn't begin to exploit all the nice things that the Pixel camera hardware can do, and I do want nice things. 😁

Installing the Google camera means having to install the Google gallery to open the pictures and more google crap, and I don't want to go to a sandbox profile every time I'd like to take a picture.

Thanks a million in advance!

⚠️ Privacy Alert: Brave Browser ≠ Fully Private

🦁 Brave markets privacy, but:
– Built on Google’s Chromium
– Sends pings to Brave servers
– Pushes crypto & ads (Brave Rewards)
– Previously injected affiliate links

✅ Safer than Chrome
⚠️ Still needs hardening

🛡 Tips to improve:
→ Disable Rewards & Wallet
→ Block Brave telemetry (NetGuard/PCAP)
→ Try LibreWolf or Mull for deeper privacy

🔐 Privacy isn’t default — it’s deliberate.

For users who just want instant messaging & group-chat, is it worth mentioning Delta Chat?

It leverages email, so all it needs is for the user to make an email address for it, which is an achievable goal for most people.

Obviously I accept Signal is the easiest to "sell", because it has voice/video calling, and we can just say it's the one US cabinet members use, so it's sort of a "household name".

Or... switch to Kagi, where disabling this feature is as simple as flipping an "off" toggle in the settings. It remains inactive unless you choose to enable it, and you also have the option to filter out AI-generated images from your search results:

I'm deleting some of my old accounts, rather than migrate them off of my old Gmail address. As I do, sometimes I think: "Oh! I should keep that one. Maybe I'll want that service again some day." But this is wrong.

The right question to ask is, "do I have history with this service that I want to maintain on their servers?" If not, then it's just as easy to sign up for a new account later (if I ever need one) than it would be to change the email on the account I already have. More likely, though, my data will just sit in their database unused for who knows how long! Better to delete it.

There's no reason to hoard old Internet accounts. I'm finding plenty of them just go stale and stop working after a few years anyway.
