University of #Michigan still punishing pro-#Palestine students after graduating

Arbitration hearings carried out this summer are overreach, former students say

from #MiddleEastEye
By #MEE staff
Published date: 2 September 2025

A little over a year ago, Drin Shapiro was a student programme assistant at the #UniversityOfMichigan's (UM) English Language Institute, and a student in his final year of a bachelor's degree in history.

Since then, he has faced criminal charges brought by the state's attorney general, lost his on-campus job, spent time behind bars, and, as of last month, was still being disciplined by the university despite having graduated in May.

All of this was because he took part in a student encampment against the war on #Gaza on 21 May 2024. He was arrested during the police raid of the encampment and was later released on bond.

Columbia’s capitulation has turned a #university that was once a site of free inquiry and learning into a shadow of its former self, an-anti university, a gated security zone with electronic entry controls, a place of fear and loathing, where faculty and students are told from on high what they can teach and say, under penalty of severe sanctions. Disgracefully, all of this is being done to cover up one of the greatest crimes of this century, the ongoing genocide in #Gaza, a crime in which #Columbia’s leadership is now fully complicit.

It’s Not Gaza Campus Protests That Endanger Jews, It’s Misguided Efforts to ‘Protect’ Them

What truly poses a danger to #Jews today is not young people demanding peace on campuses, it’s the way in which authorities, both university and governmental, but also the Jewish establishment, respond

"Inside, Khalil said he was denied his ulcer medication, forced to sleep under harsh fluorescent lights and fed “nearly inedible” food, causing him to lose 15 pounds (7 kilograms). “I cannot remember a night when I didn’t go to sleep hungry,” Khalil recalled.

Meanwhile, the #Trump administration publicly celebrated the arrest, promising to deport him and others whose protests against #Israel it dubbed “pro-terrorist, anti-Semitic, anti-American activity.” "

AP News · Columbia protester Mahmoud Khalil files $20M claim against Trump administrationPalestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil, whose role in campus protests against Israel led to his detention for over three months in immigration jail, is now seeking $20 million in damages from the Trump administration. His lawyers filed a claim Thursday, alleging false imprisonment and malicious prosecution after his March arrest by federal agents. Khalil, a legal U.S. resident, said he suffered severe anguish in jail, and continues to fear for his safety. The government has accused him of leading protests aligned with Hamas, but has not provided any evidence of a link to the terror group.

NEW YORK (AP) — A federal judge said the #Trump administration’s effort to deport #MahmoudKhalil because of his pro-#Palestinian activism at #ColumbiaUniversity likely violates the #Constitution.

In a lengthy order issued Wednesday, Judge Michael Farbiarz wrote the government’s primary justification for removing Khalil — that his beliefs may pose a threat to U.S. foreign policy — could open the door to vague and arbitrary enforcement.

Heritage officials said they did not know whether the White House, which has its own #antisemitism task force, had used Project Esther as a guide. Administration officials declined to discuss it. But Robert Greenway, a Heritage national security director who coauthored #ProjectEsther, said it was “no coincidence that we called for a series of actions to take place privately and publicly, and they are now happening.”

World-Outlook · In Graduation Speech, NYU Student Condemns U.S.-backed Israeli War in GazaOn May 14, Logan Rozos, a student at New York University (NYU), gave a brief but powerful speech during the graduation ceremony of Gallatin, a liberal arts school within NYU. In his remarks (transcribed by World-Outlook from the video of Rozos’ speech, and published in this post), the student condemned the U.S.-backed Israeli war on the Palestinian people in Gaza. NYU immediately announced it is withholding the student’s diploma as it pursues disciplinary actions against him, in the latest flashpoint between free speech principles and punishment for pro-Palestinian advocacy on U.S. college campuses.
