Was never in the military, but I grew up in a military family, lived on the Virginia side of the DC area (where the Pentagon is located) for 20+ yrs, subscribing to WaPo. It's a place that lives & breathes defense & national security (and also diplomacy & NGOs). That's all the bona fides I have. But everyone in DC knows (& in the military should know) that Pete #Hegseth is 100% unqualified to be #DefSec & it's not a job you can rely on underlings to carry your water for you.
That's not the job of #DefSec. That's the job of a front line soldier.
The job of DefSec is to manage the entire military apparatus, create policies to maintain & support the military & its readiness, interact & plan defense strategy & response w/allies, digest complex Intel, accurately read & respond to it & the actions & signals of our adversaries & other military leaders w/effective military strategies w/out blundering into war. For starters.
DefSec is not a mere figurehead.
