drupalthoughts<p>I logged back into <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/pinterest" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>pinterest</span></a> recently after reading about how it's gaining popularity again. Check out how the push and email notification toggles are all hidden behind accordions 🙀 <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/darkpattern" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>darkpattern</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/darkpatterns" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>darkpatterns</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/DeceptivePatterns" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DeceptivePatterns</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/deceptivepattern" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>deceptivepattern</span></a></p>
Strypey<p>"Many types of deceptive pattern are already illegal in the EU and US, depending on the type and context of use ... Businesses that use deceptive patterns are often caught up in legal cases and get hit with big fines and penalties ... We've collected over 400 examples in our hall of shame. The most commonly complained about companies are Google, Facebook, Amazon and LinkedIn."</p><p><a href="https://www.deceptive.design/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="">deceptive.design/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodon.nzoss.nz/tags/DeceptivePatterns" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DeceptivePatterns</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nzoss.nz/tags/DarkPatterns" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DarkPatterns</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nzoss.nz/tags/DataFarming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DataFarming</span></a></p>
Mike Gifford, CPWA<p>I am disappointed with the <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/DeceptivePatterns" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DeceptivePatterns</span></a> which subscription based businesses often use. Just got off the phone with <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/VirginMobile" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>VirginMobile</span></a> where I cancelled my Internet in May. Least I thought I did... </p><p>Forcing users to start or cancel contracts over the phone puts all the power with the vendor. I have no record of what they do, or what records they keep (or fail to). </p><p>Without a clear paper trail, I cannot track the wasted hours spent trying to cancel a service I no longer am using.</p>

David Nash<p>“Hey Windows application, I’d like to check that my camera is set up correctly.”</p><p>“Ok, let me have access to your camera and mic, and I’ll get right on it.”</p><p>“You don’t need access to my mic. You are a *camera* application.”</p><p>“Ok, let me have access to your camera and mic, and I’ll get right on it.”</p><p>“I don’t want to give you access to my mic. I just need to see if a camera is *working*, FFS.”</p><p>“Ok, let me have access to your camera and mic, and I’ll get right on it.”</p><p>(starts throwing things and still isn’t sure if the given camera is working) <a href="https://c.im/tags/DeceptivePatterns" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DeceptivePatterns</span></a></p>

Ryan Randall<p>Gentle reminder that, compared to the phrase " <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/DarkPatterns" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DarkPatterns</span></a> ", <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/DeceptivePatterns" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DeceptivePatterns</span></a> is:</p><p>- more accurate<br>- less laden with unnecessary racist &amp; colonial baggage from the Enlightenment<br>- already established within <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/UX" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>UX</span></a> conversations by the website <a href="https://www.deceptive.design/about-us" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="">deceptive.design/about-us</span><span class="invisible"></span></a> , who prudently changed their name due to this whole set of concerns.</p><p>Thanks everyone for considering this small-but-important wording improvement.</p><p>Now back to doing whatever awesomeness you were doing!</p>
Juris A.<p>Hi, everyone!
