This is remarkable and well done. I guess it's because it was installed/approved by CALTRANS. Buffered bike lane and corner barriers (so drivers don't cut over and run over bicyclists going onto the freeway). Separate crossing for pedestrians. Bike lane marked across freeway entrance/exit. This is really amazing, compared to the rest of our area. #biketooter #cycling #infrastructure #caltrans

There's an oddly progressive stretch of bicycle lane here in our town under the 101 freeway. It appears this is because it is owned and constructed by the State of California (CALTRANS), which appears to have *better* minimum requirements for bicycle lanes and pedestrian infrastructure than our town. YAY CALTRANS! #caltrans

Thurs, May 8 at 6 pm in the Gawain Family Outdoor Theater at York School: Ben Jealous, Monterey County native and currently executive director of Sierra Club. Event is free and open to the public. - Report by Agata Popęda, #MontereyCountyNow

Our #transportation advisory: York School is off Highway 68, which we personally bike on frequently but as brief a distance as possible (high-speed traffic, no bike lane). Carpooling encouraged. (TMK, and it’s a Catch 22: Due to heavy traffic on CA SR 68, making it nearly impossible to keep to a schedule, it’s just not feasible for Monterey Salinas Transit to provide bus service.)

Speaking of Hwy 68: We’re about to make yet another report to #Caltrans about more broken car parts not cleared from the shoulder. (Sigh. Not unusual, e.g., sfba.social/@bikemonterey/1137.) Where to report: csr.dot.ca.gov/

SFBA.socialBicycling Monterey 💚🌎🌍🌏 (@bikemonterey@sfba.social)Attached: 2 images So tempting to go for a Christmas Eve bike ride on 68 while the road is free of cars! Our favorite memories of CA SR 68 are the rare times it’s been car-free and quiet (e.g., past flooding that broke off shoulders). We’ll be a good girl (hear that, Santa?) and restrain ourselves and stay clear of whatever the workers are doing on SR 68 this Christmas Eve. And if we’re lucky, one thing they’re doing while out there is following up on our Dec 20 report to #Caltrans of need to clean up sharp debris in bike lane, apparently from a motor vehicle collision. #BikeTooter #California #MontereyCounty #highways #ChristmasEve #RoadClosure

Climate Action: California advocates urge state action in response to new federal administration

Jeanie Ward-Waller, interim director of ClimatePlan; Kendra Ramsey, executive director of California Bicycle Coalition; and representatives of 66 other California environmental, health, and housing advocacy groups, including active transportation advocates (full list in post) know that local and state governments still have control over many policy areas impacting #ClimateChange. They’re urging #California #Transportation Commission (CTC), California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), California #Air Resources Board (CARB), and California Department of #Housing & Community Development (HCD) to act in response to POTUS 47.

For all California highways, maintenance needs are addressed by the California Department of Transportation / Caltrans. To report needs, go to: msr.dot.ca.gov.

If you’re driving CA SR 68 (or any road) and wonder why a person on a bicycle chooses to bike in the travel lane temporarily, despite heavy traffic, odds are the person has no other option for avoiding a punctured tire. We came upon this sharp debris—apparently the remains of a motor vehicle collision—while biking last eve and earlier this week. And you bet, we've reported it to Caltrans.

It took us less than 10 minutes to report this hazardous debris. Please take time to do the same when you come upon such conditions on California highways.

BTW, we wish we had a cargo bike with brooms, dustpans, etc. like Don’s bikemonterey.org/earth-day.htm so we could just clean it up ourselves rather than wait for a Caltrans crew!

#CompleteStreetsCA
Why California needs the Complete Streets Bill:

California Dept of #Transportation / #Caltrans is often the gap in the transport network. When Caltrans routes border or intersect with local #CompleteStreets projects, it’s vital that Caltrans follow these efforts; and that requires investing new money into complete streets.
