Yay #Bitlocker. Working on a laptop for my mother-in-law because she had been compromised by some tech support scammers. I took a Clonezilla backup of the drive then temporarily disabled secure boot so I could boot a live recovery media to back up her personal files. Found out it's Bitlocker protected. No biggie, I'll just reboot it without network access and use an external drive. Rebooted, re-enabled Secure Boot, aaaannnd Bitlocker now demands a recovery key before it'll boot.

So you're telling me, the bitlocker recovery key is uploaded to Microsoft without consent or knowledge?! (I don't use Windows, so I cannot check this.)

That'd be a huge risk - both for companies and individuals: compromised cryptographic keys.

I got this new Lenovo gamer laptop on a Black Friday special and I just set up a dual-boot with #Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS (the boring but safe choice).

I used a #PowerShell command to disable #BitLocker before the Ubuntu installer would let me set up dual-boot, but after that it didn't ask any partitioning-type questions (I'd shrunk the NTFS partition ahead of time from Windows 11) and now Grub and everything works as expected (thank God).

I used Rufus to make a bootable USB stick, as suggested.

Just nuked one of my windows laptops and installed Kubuntu with fulldiskencryption. We are in for hard times and bitlocker is known to be backdoored for the 3-letter agencies. Of course, Canonical is likely also to "have a relationship" but the LEO documentation readily available online seems focused on Windows. FreeBSD is likely more secure, and it would be worthwhile researching which Linux kernels and distros are more likely to withstand a MAGA 2.0 DOJ probe. #kubuntu #linux #ubuntu #canonical #bitlocker #microsoft #backdoors #encryption #fulldiskencryption #OS #windows

TIL: If you want to `cryptsetup open` a BitLocker encrypted drive using the recovery key (8 blocks of 6 digits each), make sure to enter it _with_ the dashes between each block of digits, else it won't be recognized.

This again just shows how crazy incompetent #Microsoft really is.
My only advice is STOP using Lame to no end #BitLocker!!! Use #VeraCrypt! www.veracrypt.fr it runs on Mac, Windows & Linux.
The truth is BitLocker has failed as an encryption option so don't use it.
