Hieronymus Scholeus drew a view of #Bergen in 1581, creating the world's oldest (known) depiction of the city, and the first of a Norwegian city at all.

There was uncertainty whether the artist had ever actually been in Bergen, due to odd inconsistencies such as the palisade fence around the city which has never been there, but letters from the client to the king states the artist actually came here. The working theory is that #Scholeus drew it from a number of sketches after having left the city, and added a few details in post.

Collected with a large number of other copper engravings of cities, this image was in the German-published series "Civitates Orbis Terrarum" (Cities of the world).

If you're below a certain age today, you might call this "Witchy Bitchy Hill", due to a colourful establishment in one of the houses on the left-hand side of this street that culminates between the old and newer parts of Bryggen in #Bergen.

But it is actually named Nikolaikirkealmenningen (Street of St. Nicholas Church), named for the ruins of the medieval church dug up in the late 1860s on the right-hand side of this street. Likely it was ruined in one of the fires of the 1400s. This street was also the site of the first public square in Bergen, and also had the first city hall of Bergen from aroun 1300 to 1558.

Going to ski this weekend?

"Palmehelga" – The Palm weekend, after Palm Sunday – in 1956 at #Bergen #train station. It is the start of Easter holiday, and people are stacking up their skis and ski poles to take the train to Voss or Geilo (or cabins somewhere around there) for the Easter week.

Musikkpaviljongen – the music gazebo – in the city park in the early 30s. Quite similar to today's view from Hotel Norge.

The gazebo was bought as a gift by businessman, consul and politician Fredrik Georg Gade sr., inspired by #Moorish #architecture.

Sauron hidden in plain sight in #Bergen? No, it is just Slettebakken Church.

Opened in 1970, it is a concrete construction with a fan-shaped copper roof, and a glass slit that lets daylight in to the main room. The "AD ASTRA" plan by architect Tore Sveram was apparently met with skepticism by the municipality, but loved by the congregation, and still stands as a striking landmark by Tveitevannet in Bergen.
