So much interesting stuff about that and this thread.

It's not a real image from the study. It's a cartoon done for that magazine piece by London-based illustrator Simon Landrein, so all of the arguments about the cartoon (trees, curve, pedestrian crossing) aren't responding to what the actual test questions were, which were asked back in 2018 moreover.

The NHTSA has launched a formal investigation into Tesla’s upcoming robotaxi service, set to launch in Austin by June 2025. Officials are demanding detailed info on Tesla’s self-driving tech, safety protocols, and emergency plans. This follows concerns over Tesla’s FSD system in low-visibility conditions.

I still find the sight of Waymo vehicles driving around Austin with nobody at the steering wheel uncanny.

Will these vehicles doom the human driven taxi?

Although I can see how these vehicles could be beneficial if they were introduced as part of a publicly regulated and accountable integrated transport policy, I fear that in the USA at least they will become the tools of private monopoly; fares will not come down significantly in spite of labour cost savings, taxi driving as a path to social advancement will be closed off, and their use will chip away at support for mass transit.

We should not be allowing private business to dictate the future of transport.
