THE GREAT AUSTRALIAN NIGHTMARE

" Owning your own home has long been part of the Australian dream. It's turned into a nightmare....Duncan and Sue are saving to buy a house, like many young people. They're lucky, for both are working - Duncan as a building worker and Sue in an office.
No matter how hard they save, that home-of-their-own moves further away. Their deposit never seems big enough and high interest rates mean crippling
repayments. So Duncan and Sue have to rent, "paying money out to tread water -not getting anywhere". Until recently, seven out of 10 Australians could buy their own homes but now fewer than four
out of 10 can afford it." (1978)
