This week's Linux and FOSS news
LINUX NEWS
Nobara 42 released with Brave as the default browser (with custom policy disabling Brave Wallet, Rewards, VPN, AI Chat, and Tor while setting DNS Over HTTPS to automatic), new rolling-release model, KDE Discover and GNOME Software replaced by flatpost (a custom Flatpak installer), driver manager provides simple option to switch between open and closed NVIDIA drivers etc.:
https://alternativeto.net/news/2025/5/linux-distro-nobara-42-ships-with-brave-by-default-and-shifts-to-rolling-release-model/
(Wow they made the thing I wanted all the time: a Brave browser without all that additional crap. The only thing missing is availability on Flathub lol)
(Separate software installers for native packages and Flatpaks? Why don't just add Flatpak support to their existing DNF frontend? ️)
Archinstall 3.0.5 released with optional file encryption for user credentials, hashed password storage, additional post-installation options, support for Labwc, Niri, River and Xmonad window managers:

KDE Frameworks 6.15 fixes a 9-year old file transfer suspend bug:

Ephraims Wochenrückbllick: KW 46, 2024
In KW 46 gibt es Meldungen der Projekte Ubuntu, Fedora und Arch Linux.
My first ever #ArchLinux install is complete! Manually; no #archinstall for this first time around. #KDE #Plasma is up and running! Some configuration to do and lots more packages to install, but it's working!
(Plasma here is using configs that were left in my home partition from prior Linux installs)
#linuxtablet #linuxaudio Arch can be installed through the CLI, as well as through #archinstall. In addition, there are at least two additional independent installer projects. These all use vanilla Arch. Then there are the Arch family of distros. The ones that immediately catch my attention are: #endeavouros (what I currently use), #garuda, #rebornos, and #manjaro linux. These all benefit from the AUR and from being rolling releases. Most are highly configurable and benefit from the Arch wiki.
#linuxtablet So, I was able to successfully install Arch. I tried to do it manually, because I wanted to learn. Between constant family distractions and such, I got about halfway before I had to go somewhere with my family. When I came back, it was late. I used #archinstall and got the install done in minutes. Arch was installed, but there were several things still pending. I’m sure it wouldn’t take too much time to figure things out, but I was out of time.
#linuxtablet I’m thinking that since I am so close with EndeavourOS, I may as well see if I can use regular Arch. With #archinstall, it doesn’t seem to be too much more of a stretch to just use Arch over EndeavourOS.
#linuxtablet I won’t lie, Arch makes me feel nervous and incompetent. But, since I learned about #archinstall, I feel hopeful that I can actually get everything running.
