Fellow Android developers using Google Play, how is your edge-to-edge refactoring summer going?
I'm mostly done but FOSDEM Companion will have to wait until next year.

Recent updates to the official Tomorrowland app bring a number of major improvements to the app. Right on time for the Tomorrowland 2025 festival in Belgium!
Performance boost alert!
We tracked down a sneaky issue where Android’s WebView loadUrl would choke on large strings (looking at you, base64 tiles ).
This fix is now live in Collabora Office 25.04.2 for Android — grab it from the app store and enjoy documents that load like a dream.

Inter is such a great font for mobile development: it’s quite close to Roboto, so they look good together and Roboto basically becomes a condensed Inter.
And it’s even closer to SF Pro, although a bit more spacious, which makes it great for long body texts on iOS, where SF Pro can feel a bit too interface'ish.
And it supports Cyrillic!

I know Compose has abstractions that make this a non-issue. That doesn't help if you're dealing with an older codebase that isn't fully Compose-based yet, though. #androiddev

The TL;DR of these changes is "the marketing gimmicks of _immersive experiences_ decided it is now the app devs' responsibility to only draw app content where it won't conflict with system UI or the extremely fun development that is cameras and sensors cut out from the screen.
If I'm making an app that benefits from being "immersive", that's cool. For everything else it's a massive pain in the ass to not just be presented with a safe rectangular area.
Did you know that you can zoom Compose previews in Android Studio by holding the ⌘-Key and scrolling?
This is really useful!

️ FivestaRSS: a small service that pulls your app’s reviews from the App Store and Google Play into an RSS feed.
You can then connect the feed to Slack, Discord, or anywhere else that supports RSS.
Easy to deploy: no database needed, just a simple XML file as persistent storage per app.
Google Play Store preps a small but welcome UI change

A friend is building an app to help immigrants detained by ICE.
It's a web app currently, but is intended to be a mobile app.
Anyone have experience building and deploying mobile apps and interested in volunteering time to help a new app with a good cause?
Feel free to share with others or boost for reach.

After all the effort involved in learning Android and then building each UI twice, now I can simply copy the iOS UI code, type “do the same on Android,” and often it just works instantly
Truly cross-platform development may see a renaissance with LLMs. Not just .NET, but for all portable languages like Rust, and maybe even Kotlin Multiplatform if JetBrains puts more effort in promoting it.
