Blake Patterson<p>Forty years ago today, the Commodore Amiga 1000 was released to the world. With its unprecedented graphics &amp; sound capabilities, powerful 16-bit CPU and custom chipset, and UNIX-like multitasking OS, the Amiga was a truly revolutionary system for its time. And, many are still in use to this day, with the platform seeing new software and hardware development from month to month. </p><p>I presently have three, myself. :-) </p><p>Happy 40th, Amiga!</p><p><a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/Amiga" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Amiga</span></a> <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/CommodoreAmiga" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CommodoreAmiga</span></a> <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/vintagtecomputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>vintagtecomputing</span></a> <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/retrocomputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>retrocomputing</span></a> <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/retrocomputers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>retrocomputers</span></a> <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/computinghistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>computinghistory</span></a> <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/computers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>computers</span></a> <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/MC68K" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MC68K</span></a> <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/AmigaDOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AmigaDOS</span></a> <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/AmigaOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AmigaOS</span></a> <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/tech" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>tech</span></a> <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/technews" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>technews</span></a> <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/vintagetech" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>vintagetech</span></a></p>
Harry Sintonen<p>Recently I found a 35 year old bug from <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/AmigaOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AmigaOS</span></a> - in certain situations it releases a FileLock that is still in use, resulting in use after free condition. The effects range from "nothing" to complete system lockup, depending on your luck. I believe this bug was introduced in Kickstart 2.0 (36.x), released in 1990.</p><p><a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/amiga" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>amiga</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/retrocomputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>retrocomputing</span></a></p>

Bernie<p>Since I couldn't figure out what happened and how to repair the FFS directory structure, and re-transferred the <a href="https://mstdn.io/tags/AmigaOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AmigaOS</span></a> 3.2 system I normally use in UAE.</p><p>The problem never reappeared, so perhaps it was just FFS being prone to corruption when writes are interrupted by a crash. And this <a href="https://mstdn.io/tags/Amiga" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Amiga</span></a> was rebooted numerous times while I was chasing the remaining hardware and software stability issues.</p><p>Anyway, these are some of the joys and sorrows of <a href="https://mstdn.io/tags/vintagecomputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>vintagecomputing</span></a> ❤️</p>
Bernie<p>Real 3D, one of the first solid modelers featuring constructive geometry, boolean operations and smooth surfaces, also debuted on the <a href="https://mstdn.io/tags/Amiga" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Amiga</span></a>.</p><p>Real 3D was very advanced for its time, but also harder to learn. I never went beyond modeling simple shapes with it, but I had an older friend who was using Real 3D for architecture.</p><p>Lots of great 3D modelers and ray tracers originated on <a href="https://mstdn.io/tags/AmigaOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AmigaOS</span></a>:<br><a href="https://sites.google.com/site/3dtimeline" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">sites.google.com/site/3dtimeli</span><span class="invisible">ne</span></a></p>

Bernie<p>I reboot into the original Workbench 3.1, and all SmartFileSystem partitions are readable again... phew! 😌</p><p>Here, Directory Opus 5 is fully replacing the Workbench.
