Jake in the desert<p>Polish engineer Piotr Ostapowicz has created what may be the world's smallest 8-bit Atari computer recreation, the "Atarino". The entire system—processor, graphics chips, sound hardware, and memory controllers—fits on a module measuring just 2×1.5 centimeters (about 0.79×0.59 inches), roughly the size of a postage stamp: <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2025/06/polish-engineer-creates-postage-stamp-sized-1980s-atari-computer" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">arstechnica.com/gadgets/2025/0</span><span class="invisible">6/polish-engineer-creates-postage-stamp-sized-1980s-atari-computer</span></a></p><p><a href="https://c.im/tags/Atari" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Atari</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/8Bit" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>8Bit</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/RetroComputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RetroComputing</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/RetroGaming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RetroGaming</span></a></p>
Amiga4000T<p>PLA 906114 is a great IC</p><p>The one the flaw that this IC had, is the fact that in the tropics it easily went close to 70 Celsius which meant total Destruction of the IC if you didn't put the heat sink on it. Quite logical that in my country all C64s died because that IC failed.</p><p>It was wonderful to work on the Commodore 64</p><p>Because of the 8-Bit technology machine language it was easy understanding what the ICs did</p><p>It was quite easy; the whole machine was a relatively easy thing to learn in comparison to a modern x86 system</p><p><a href="https://c.im/tags/RetroComputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RetroComputing</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/C64" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>C64</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/PLA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PLA</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/8bit" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>8bit</span></a></p>

The Penguin of Evil<p>I have finally I think figured out why the 8085 undocumented DSUB (double subtract) uses BC. The definitive divide routines everyone used for 8080 were the Fig Forth ones as they were public domain and very efficient. Guess what specific thing they need to make them go fast - yep replacing a messy 'HL - BC' subroutine with DSUB. And guess what the subroutine was called "DSUB".</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/retrocomputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>retrocomputing</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/8bit" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>8bit</span></a></p>
