While browsing the internet and using social apps, we all deserve to be *SAFE BY DEFAULT*.
It would take *5 tectonic changes* to improve the health of our digital spaces.
Number 1 should be adopted ASAP in order saveguard the upcoming EU elections

1/7
@EU_Commission
PROFILING OFF by default
Behavioural profiling by default? No, thank you. Instead platforms’ should only use explicit signals given by us, the users, to decide what content we see, e.g.:interests declared
feedback on specific content (clicks on “show me more/less” button)
2/7
Optimising for values other than “engagement”
Platforms algorithms should prioritise relevance and credibility of the recommended content, e.g.:legitimate, credible, transparent sources
content appreciated by diverse users
3/7
#socialmedia
AUTHENTIC PERSONALISATION
Platforms should enable* us to:remove unwanted type of content from our feeds
‘reset’ our feeds & start afresh
explore how feeds change as a result of the choices we make in settings
decide what kind of content we see whenever we open an app
*Or simply open up their infrastructure to allow us a choice of independent, third-party content curation and moderation services. Services we can trust to protect our vulnerabilities and follow our conscious choices!
4/7
POSITIVE FRICTION or an easy way out
Instead of boosting engagement at any price, platforms should help us:think before we share
disconnect (e.g. by introducing a set of friendly reminders and limits)
5/7
NO more ADDICTIVE DESIGN (manipulating us)
VLOPS should remove features like:notifications on by default
infinite scroll
video autoplay
misleading buttons that trick us into thinking we are in control (ever tried to use the “don't show content like this” button?)
