Reintro post following instance migration

(re-)#introduction on a new instance: part of the Brussels bubble since the early 90s, currently working on Central Asia in the EEAS - but posting in a strictly personal capacity - about Brexit (boo), UK politics (boo), (yay), international relations (meh), (yay), (yay), and my personal mission to decarbonise my life (eek)

Elon Musk says he'll make his own phone if Google and Apple de-platform him: gizmodo.com/elon-musk-alternat

I'd LOVE to see him try. (iOS has been developing since 2005-ish, and Android for even longer; the only way he'll get a software stack is to use Android as a platform or buy in a cheap also-ran from China. Either path is a quick way to lose a few billion dollars more without shipping a useable product. A dozen billion here, a dozen billion there, pretty soon it's all gone ...)

Good morning! A post just rolled across my fedi-timeline saying not to post about politics on Mastodon, so I'm here to remind you that:

1 "politics" refers to decision-making about how to live together in groups
2 choosing to not participate in political discussion is saying you support the status quo, and is a political stance
3 abstaining from politics because you feel safe from its impacts is a privilege and a choice to abandon your more vulnerable neighbours

to get to know me:

The Magus, John Fowles
The Silmarillion, Tolkien
The Player of Games, Iain M. Banks
HMS Surprise, Patrick O’Brian
A Short History of Progress, Ronald Wright
Poets in a Landscape, Gilbert Highet
Three Men in a Boat, Jerome K. Jerome

So, the European Union has set up its own Mastodon instance, EU Voice, as an official channel/platform for all its many institutions - what a great initiative social.network.europa.eu/about

For all arguments about staying on Twitter, I’d just quote what someone on here said earlier:

When a Nazi buys your bar and starts inviting over all the other Nazis, and the Nazis get free drinks and start to push around all of the other people there, who aren’t Nazis, it’s a Nazi Bar. I wouldn’t go to a Nazi Bar.

That’s it.

UK Politics; PPE VIP lane

Because people are talking about the unlawful PPE VIP lane again (good), I just wanted to reshare these truly shocking stats from Spotlight on Corruption:

🚩 59% of all money awarded to VIPs was spent on useless PPE

🚩 HALF of VIPs supplied PPE that wasn’t fit for purpose

🚩 One third of all £ spent on unsuitable PPE went to VIPs

🚩 £1 BILLION was awarded to VIPs for unsuitable PPE

It’s always worth reminding Musk’s fan boys that these are the brilliant men who founded Tesla. Elon was just a series-A investor who bought in, then sabotaged the company enough until these men were pushed out, then he spent the next ten years telling everyone he founded Tesla.

@pimlicat Something I thought you might be interested in.

A while ago, #Alaska narrowly voted to change its voting system from #FPTP to a form of #AV called #RCV. Subsequently Alaskans voted for a moderate Democrat Mary Peltola instead of Sarah Palin as their Congresswoman and re-elected moderate Republican Lisa Murkowski over MAGA Republican Kelly Tshibaka.

I asked Alaskans whether they want to go back and they said a big fat No. reddit.com/r/alaska/comments/z

Having recently looked into my DNA - with some interesting and even surprising results - I find I can identify with this more than ever.

@ottocrat thanks for sharing this very unusual map. Here an article on that map, its creator, and the idea behind it. 👇

@ottocrat have you read de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Die_We ? It is blowing me away - a memoir as much of Europe as of the author. A true European loving Europe to the fullest. And losing it.
