@gisgeek @jmaris Personally, I already find mastodon mainstream in the sense that I can clearly find enough content and information compared to 3 or 4 years ago. Otherwise, in the other sense of mainstream, there's a lot more respect/benevolence, so it's much less the case.

Right, the drift of X/Twitter in the last 3 years or more has destroyed entire communities of peers that lived there. But toxicity is not exclusive to big socials. We had similar experiences at the newsgroup and IRC times, too. The answer to avoiding trolls and other beasts is always human-sized communities, autoregulation with moderators, and respect for netiquette. That will be true for Mastodon and Matrix, too. It's digital sociology applied.
