1/5 Today, @EP_SingleMarket voted to protect encryption and reject unreliable tech in the CSA Regulation! #CSAR
BUT the Committee does not go far enough: its opinion only partly targets detection orders.

2/5 Technology is not a silver bullet & cannot resolve complex societal problems.
The IMCO opinion adopted today rejects measures that would undermine end-to-end #encryption & requires that technologies must be sufficiently effective.
3/5 NO mandatory age verification requirement in the opinion. Instead, the Committee added protections if providers decide to use age verification:
respecting the data of young people
avoiding biometric processing
preventing social exclusion

4/5 However, the Committee's suggestion for targeting #DetectionOrders still falls short of the necessary individual-level suspicion to justify such an intrusion into a person’s private life.
The CSAR proposal amounts to mass surveillance & must be rejected.
5/5 EDRi calls on @EP_Justice to protect people's right to secure communication online & reject the law in September when voting on their position.
Children deserve more, we all deserve more than #MassSurveillance. #StopScanningMe
