In her podcast, Brené Brown explains that - unlike all her other books - her latest book, Atlas of the Heart, will not be translated as its about emotions. She considers emotions tightly connected to ones culture and she would have no way to make sure that the #translations expressed exactly what she meant to say. You can listen to the podcast here (its the second question discussed): brenebrown.com/podcast/atlas-o #xl8

I don't know, guys, but if the nurses are eating at foodbanks, we probably need to start taxing the billionaires more

Good morning! A post just rolled across my fedi-timeline saying not to post about politics on Mastodon, so I'm here to remind you that:

1 "politics" refers to decision-making about how to live together in groups
2 choosing to not participate in political discussion is saying you support the status quo, and is a political stance
3 abstaining from politics because you feel safe from its impacts is a privilege and a choice to abandon your more vulnerable neighbours

Tote Radfahrer gibt es nur, wenn man sie für die eigene politische Agenda einspannen kann.

If you read #Reddit but do not comment, a #privacy oriented alternative is #Teddit.

Just replace 'reddit' with 'teddit' in the URL. For example:

reddit.com/r/mastodon

becomes

teddit.net/r/mastodon

Oversized EVs waste energy (bc of giant batteries) and also endanger other road users.

To address EV car bloat, Norwegian officials have proposed a weight-based fee of NOK 12 ($1.10)/kilo over 500 kilos.

Example: An Audi e-tron would cost ~$2,330 more.

Since Mastodon saw its initial popularity circa 2017, I've noticed that most users and those reporting on it either don't think about the Fediverse as anything more than Mastodon, or treat its history as beginning with Eugen Rochko and the beginning of Mastodon. In fact, Mastodon is the latest in a long line of federated social networks going at least back to Identi.ca, and though I wasn't around for all of it, I find this history pretty interesting. (Thread; boosts welcome!)

Hans Magnus #Enzensberger, eminent German author and intellectual, died yesterday at the age of 93.

How soon before there is a research fellowship available for #translation skills in #typos online?
I'd do it!

Wie is hiervoor verantwoordelijk? Hallo?

As a student I was once asked for directions by a bunch of burly Kiwis in a van. It was too complicated to explain so I just hopped in with them to show them the way. They turned out to be the All Blacks on tour, they were visiting a team mate who was on scholarship to my uni. That wouldn’t/couldn’t happen now. 😂
