German police prevent Irish people from speaking and singing in Irish in Germany.
But hey, at least we still have the Single Market™, amirite?
EU, you’re doing amazing, sweetie!
@aral Irish is an official language of the EU, and as an Irish person I find this very insulting, racist even we have a history of not being allowed to use our language.
@fi @aral In your own country, yes. There are several languages in which you cannot sing a particular kind of song in Germany, German first among them. According to the article, their rules are: you can sing in ANY language as long as there's an interpreter present. First I've heard of it, but hey, it's Germany, they have their own hate speech laws. You can agree or disagree with them, but they're not about you or your language.
@fi @aral
Sure, whatever you say, but it doesn't make it any more anti-Irish.
(Basques have their own history of not being able to use their own language and if they refused to comply with obtuse German rules I imagine not being an official EU language would be just as irrelevant in their case and not anti-Basque...)
@fi @aral
I can just about imagine the blockhead officer in charge responding that they should have faxed their chants in for pre-approval if they didn't want to pay an interpreter, but bad jokes aside, I don't know if the Irish are super central to German debates on this topic (or any other). I suspect not, but that's for Germans to confirm or not.
