On the + side:
- Record turnout of 84%
- The libertarian party that held the coalition hostage and staged a government collapse will probably get zero seats
- There's a chance the left-turned-authoritarian splinter party BSW also stays out
- Comeback of the Left party
- Of the coalition partners, the Greens held up the best. A 2%p loss is respectable.
- Conservative CDU <30%, despite predictions up to 37%, 2nd worst result ever
- Neonazis <=20%. Way too much, but still less than predicted

Now that the "preliminary official results" are in, things look slightly better for the AfD and a bit worse for the Greens, but the overall picture remains. Since it's Monday, here are some negatives in addition to the obvious ones: In a Grand Coalition the SPD will continue its asymptotic decline to irrelevance. The AfD will be showered in state money, maxing out the "campaign reimbursement". It can also secure new jobs for its members. Crucial resources for terror and propaganda activities.
It's not a great result. Not by any means.
But much, much better than it might have been.
@DetersHenning 20% of 84% is very hopeful. Much better than what happened here in the States where voter turnout was only 63.9%. We have a lot of issues with voter suppression. Does Germany have a similar issue for the 16% who didn't vote?
@DoctorMemory
I don't think it's a systematic strategy here. Low turnout is more related to indifference/resignation.
@DetersHenning @DoctorMemory There is no voter suppression in Germany. We have a law where everybody has to register their place of residence, which automatically puts you on the register once you come of age. The register will not record your party affiliation, if any.
The only people who need to explicitly register to vote are people living abroad. We had somme problems this time with the deadline being too short, so many people didn't get their letters in time. It's < 0,5 of voters though.
@DoctorMemory @DetersHenning election is always on a Sunday, you don’t need to preregister, and you can vote by mail if you feel like
